Rarest Sheaffer.

I believe the solid gold PFM was done by S.J.Rose (London) on order from Sheaffer U.K.and it's rumored to have been 100 pieces.

The Rose PFMs were 9K, I think; I've seen or had dealings with a few of them over the years. I've heard the 100 figure before, but also speculation that they were not popular and that it was possible that either the contract wasn't completely filled or that some were scrapped unsold.

Quite apart from these were the American-made high-number PFMs, none of which made it into even limited production. Where they are now, I don't know -- they used to be held by Sheaffer, as I recall.

Yes, 9ct is correct. The "gossip" ( for what it's worth) is all where made and either pre-sold or given away..I wasn't in the "right place at the right time" though :( . That you've seen a few is a revelation, not that I'll ever afford one !! I haven't heard American high-number PFMs mentioned before.

By request, here are the balance demonstrator (with a snorkel demonstrator for comparison) and the solid-gold balance set. Had a picture of the balance set but it took me a while to dig out the demonstrators for a quick photo. As I said, I'm still looking for an early flattop in mottled rubber. I'm also still looking for nice gold-filled flattops, which may be the favorite part of my Sheaffer collection.

I have to say, that Snorkel Demonstrator is beyond cool! :)

I know they aren't as impressive as the demonstrators or that solid gold Balance set but how about a pair of OS Balances with rare nibs? One with a fabulous extra fine flex nib and one with a Minuskin 0.8mm Stub re-tip (a necessity after the tipping from one tine pinged off and tried to blind me...)

Wonderful stuff guys. I continue to be amazed at how well preserved the old "plastic" body pens can be. At our club meeting on Sat someone brought a brushed Stainless Steel No Nonsense pen with chrome trim and steel nib! The finish is similar to the Targa pens. He purchased it new some 30 years ago and has many of the NN pens, but says he has not seen another one like it.

Not really, the moniker belongs to the gentleman from New Jersey. :P

Mine are on OS Balance pens, the only ones I collect. You have 2 great nibs, enjoy them!

There have been many nice Sheaffer's posted in this thread. I've enjoyed feasting on all the nice photos. Lots of cachet here.

Since the title of this thread has to do with the Rarest Sheaffer, I'll start with the caveat that I don't really own any Sheaffer pens that would live up to the 'r' word. Just some nice pens in the acquisition (collection).

However, I do own what I would classify as close as possible to my view of the "r" word. In my collection. And it is NOT a pen. It is a pencil. Found in the wild a few years back (and I posted it as well).

I've not seen one like this before, though Roger Wooten says he has seen one. That I don't dispute so I put up the challenge (request?) that anyone with one of these please post a photo of yours. Here is mine:

Given the patent number, I have to believe there are more out there somewhere.

Sorry, that came across as a little trite. I missed off the tongue.gif smiley from the end of the sentence doh.gif.

I've seen your photos of the Museum when you were there, Pedro. Nice stuff. I haven't had a chance to drop by Ft. Madison and see my friends, the Fiorellas and Repperts, since the Museum opened. The last time I stopped in was when it was being prepped and remodeled before the exhibits arrived.

Needless to say, I missed this photo of the pencil. It looks a little more Balance-ish than mine. I think they are slightly different designs but don't know for sure. Nice to see another dual ended pencil though. Particularly since its in the Sheaffer Museum.

I'd say circa 1920s, but I am not sufficiently focused on pencil development to say with certainty.

Greetings from the UK!

I'm sorry to say that none of the pens in my (pitiful) collection would come anywhere near the description of rare !

However, I am entranced by the Lady Sheaffer Skripserts, particularly those in the well known illustration from Pen World, August, 1994. Would anyone agree that the CX Matelasse is rare? Apart from the Pen World illustration, and an almost certain imposter on eBay, I have never seen any other depiction of this pen anywhere.

At the minute I have 17 of the 19 pens in the Pen World picture, along with 5 matching pencils. Still looking for the XX and the Matelasse.

I know some people think the Ladies are not worth thinking about but I love them !!! Sorry about the standard of the pics, I used my phone for convenience.

Just surfacing after end of year festivities and stumbled across your post re Sheaffer Lady Skripserts.I am intrigued to know where my one and only example shows in reference books .The pen on extreme right which is red with gold tracery is I think the same model and I have seen a lot of them on sites, but I have never seen one like mine which is Gold with red inlaid tracery.

Perhaps you could help identify this one.

PS the section is also red

Is this the same as the one you mention?

post-8727-0-41016500-1326068376.jpg

If so, I believe it's one of the later models (circa 1962). It was in the third picture in my original post, again on the far right, but the colours hadn't shown very well. The nib section is more burgandy than red.

The pen immediately to the left of it is exactly the same but with black lines on gold and a black section. There is very little in the way of reference for these later pens other than to mention that the conical nib gave way to the concave one around 1962. I did write to Sheaffer some time back to see what they could add. They referred me to a lovely lady who used to work at Sheaffer before they were bought out by BIC, who explained that most of the history had been skipped after the takeover. Heartbreak.

I continue to seek out whatever info I can about the Lady range but it's hard work!

If the pic above is not your pen, perhaps you could post a picture to help with ID.

I have posted this pen before but seems appropriate to do so in this thread. Probably more common than a lot of what's been shown here but still not an easy Sheaffer to find.

Generally speaking, where did you guys source most of your rare pens? Suppose I have $50K in cash, where do I go to buy these really rare Sheaffers?

Mostly eBay, including the Targa Masterpiece FP/BP set. Although the Imperial Masterpiece was purchased from Gary Ellison (www.sheaffertarga.com) over in the UK. And I found the wooden Palissandre de Rio on the Pentrace Green Board. I have found several very nice pens at shows, but as it happens none of them were rare Sheaffers.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
