Seen this pencil sharpener?

I just got mine in the mail this week and it's a fun little toy.

Lee Valley

OH MY GOD THAT'S AWESOME!!!

I would LOVE to have this in my art room! It would work a million times better than that stupid wall mounted turny roundy sharpener. It only sharpens one side of the pencil and leaves the wood sticking out ahead of the graphite so you can't write with the stupid things. This is GENIUS!!!

That is Awesome!

Anyone use the Rhodia pencils, they are really nice, but a bit pricey.

I bought some house brand pencils from DickBlick, but haven't tried them yet! They look nice though!

i like how wooden pencils write, but thet're too thin to hold comfortably and the lead dulls too fast. a good mechanical pencil (papermate megalead with the clip removed(better for penspinning!)) with .5 B leads and it's just perfect.

Hey, a penspinning mention! I only know two tricks, alas—sonic and sonic rise—both learned back in 9th grade, and find that a Pentel RSVP is ideal. Happily, they hand those pens out like candy at work. I might be too old to learn new tricks now. :)

I have one of those in green. It's beautiful and sharpens very nicely. The point is a bit shorter than some, but that seems to help pencils last a bit longer so I am definitely not complaining! :)

I love pencils. Maybe even more than fountain pens ( not sure if I should say this here... don't throw things at me, please!)

It's the lead, the wood, the boughshaped curves at the pencilpoint and the joy of getting one long wooden sliver when sharpening them.

One of my next fp's might well be a GvFC Classic one because they remind me of pencils.

On Engeika's site I keep returning to a Pilot maple mechanical pencil.

How about Artisanal Pencil Sharpening?

I don't know anything about this guy other than what's on the website.

$15 sounds reasonable, right?

Is this an April fools thing? :roflmho:

this reminds me of another reason why I like pencils, sharpening them with a knife, and finding you have to sharpen the knife first, and doing that with another knife, and how you then flake off bits of wood and have to be careful not to cut of the pencil lead..

maybe I can go work for these pencil sharpening artists

This is fun. I'm going to have to pick up some Blackwings and one of those Alvin bottle sharpeners.

Thanks for the pencil topic!

I've been accused of being AR, but this is over the top! :headsmack:

And yes, I do want the Lee Valley sharpener, and the ink bottle thing!

Although not so much of a geek I do miss the times when I had math and other such subjects in high-school and university where I could use a pencil. Recently I bought a fairly cheap, yet nice, mechanical pencil to play around with. Feels nice.

All bleeding stops...eventually

I used to go through a lot of wood pencils when I was majoring in graphic design. After changing schools and majors I moved back to using mechanical pens, first just the cheap ones you can buy at the grocery store and then when I found fountain pens I moved on to using the pencils that matched my pens. So far I only have matching pencils for my jade Duofold Jr., Duo Vac and Parker '51'.

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

I love pencils, mostly I use the Dixon Tri-Conderoga for is larger, triangular and rubberized body. Nice writers as well. I have yet to try the Blackwing, which is a hame snce I live only a mile and a quarter from the company that makes them. I have some vintge mechanical pencils an the 1.1mm is now earning its keep in my house.

I have yet to find a sharpening solution that works better than a decent rotary sharpener. I believe JetPens sells one from Mitsubishi that should be good, and products from Carl in Japan are good too, if you can find them. They produce exceptionally long, slightly concave points that last a while. Far better than any of the handheld bladed sharpener junk I've tried (including that mediocre Kum Automatic Long Point sharpener that some people like to hype). I keep a couple sharpened pens in a wrap and they usually last me most of the day. If I have to do a LOT of writing, I switch to a 2mm leadholder with an awesome little lead pointer.

If you're looking for a high-end pencil, I recommend the top-end Japanese offerings from Mitsubishi and Tombow. They lack erasers, but there are no better pencils made anywhere today. Sadly, the prices from JetPens are a bit high...you can find them quite a bit cheaper through Japanese retailers like pencils.jp, and you can even buy them as singles to try out.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
