LOL! Yeah, it was a bit like that actually... :cloud9:

I use a fountain pen because one ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to write a few reasonable words with a fountain pen.

I am in the process of ordering a Nakaya pen and hope you can help me with the color selection.

Is the pen in this post really a kuro tamenuri (blackish red) and not a aka tamenuri (redish red)?

Many thanks for your help!

This is a Kuro-Tamenuri Piccolo.

I wrote this review when I had an older monitor, which over time had darkened a little, as a result my photos in this review are slightly over-bright.

Your Kuro-Tamenuri will be a very blackish colour when it arrives. :)

Many thanks for your help and your excellent post - I will start with a Kuro-Tamenuri Piccolo too.

You should really get a "kickback payment" from Nakaya ... :-)

This is a beautiful pen.

I would like to add an important detail regarding the Nakaya pen.

I ordered mine from Nakaya with special design, a writer model.

What is unique about Nakaya Pens and in my opinion more importand than its look is how it write

If you go to the Nakaya order web page, a significant detailed questions are asked by Nakaya to the purchasor of the pen in regards to how they hold their pens, how close to the nib is the pen held etc.... and with the resulting answer, the pen master grinds the pen to perfection to fit your own handwriting.

In addition the Urushi material is very light. Despite all of the guilding options one adds to the pen, this writing instrument is extremely light.

In my opinion this is one of the most amazing writing instrument money can buy and it is worth all of the money

Great Buy

David

This is my all time favorite thread on FPN. I love the way Laura writes and I come back and read this thread time and again just to read her prose.

Beautiful review, Laura, thanks, and YOU are partially responsible for the THIRD Piccolo at home. It arrived today and it is an Aka Tame nuri with a flex F which will be a present for my wife. She tried it and I think that she will not be able to wait till Xtmas!

I should have a third Piccolo (special order) arriving in early November. No doubt there will be more sexy photos and gushing prose for all!

I must say though, the Kuro-Tame Piccolo remains my favourite, they say you never forget your first love... ;)

I picked up a Cigar Piccolo in black-red with a medium cursive Italic nib at the Toronto Pen Show earlier this month. I had wanted a Nakaya Urushi pen for a while, but continued to vascilate on which one to get: a Piccolo writer with clip or a Portable writer with clip. I was leaning towards the latter until I went to the Toronto Pen Show. Prior to that I had dismissed the clipless models since I thought they looked unfinished and I had decided against the Piccolo as I thought it too small. Even after I tried the clipless Piccolo at the Pen Show I was hesitant and it took me several hours of contemplation before I made up my mind to approach the vendor again. The vendor and I talked about the pen for a bit as I held it and I finally decided I'd buy it if the vendor would do something on the price; well he did and I bought the pen. I've been using it for two weeks now and all my fears regarding its size and its being clipless have gone out the window. It truly is a unique and beautiful pen; minimalist yet very captivating in its minimalism. It doesn't feel small when I write with it, which I think is due to the diameter of the section, and the Deb Kinnie medium cursive Italic nib lays down a lovely line.

This is a beautiful pen and the review a pleasant read. Before I read this I hadn't understood the fuss about Nakaya, but I believe I do now... I think my next wish/purchase will be a Nakaya.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
