Inexpensive Italic Nibs For The Noodlers Piston Pen

I got a Manuscript beginner's calligraphy set almost a year ago for about $7. The pen itself was good (excellent flow, very smooth set of italic nibs, screw off cap, light weight) until it started leaking (near the converter, maybe international converters would work in it.)

 

Anyway, I threw out the pen long ago but kept some of the nibs I took out from the separate sections. On Monday, I discovered that the nibs were a perfect fit for the feed on my Noodler's piston pen (the one that comes with a standard fine-medium nib.) After a few adjustments, I had an amazingly smooth italic nibbed pen with fairly good flow for not much money. Now I'm starting to play around with calligraphy (can't wait to get a noodler's flex pen though.)

 

So for anyone who wants a pretty good set of italic nibs to go with a Noodler's piston pen (or similar pen) for very little $, I highly recommend this set. Manuscript has a few other similar sets, including a Medium, Fine, Broad, 2B, 3B and 4B calligraphy set for $17. I may have simply gotten a bad pen, but these would be a great deal just for the nibs alone.

EDIT: These nibs are buttery smooth (especially with Private Reserve ink) and have a little bit of flex. The tines do not widen much, but the nib actually bends a little while writing - I think this is what some refer to as feedback. Quite fun and highly recommended.

Just finding how far to seat the nib and feed into the section (which for me was as far back as it would go.) I've never really taken nibs and put them into different sections before, so this may be normal and not much of an adjustment.

Although far, far from having the knowledge many of our members have, I think that's pretty much a usual or standard adjustment. Good for you to have taken that on! I hope it writes well and continues to do so!!
