I just wanted to give a quick posting of this lovely MB special edition Carlo Collodi ink I got from Pen Boutique.

Comes in 35ml round bottles and has exceptional writing, flow, lubrication, shading, and easy pen cleaning characteristics. (thumbnails)

Added a couple other ink comparisons and on Clairefontaine paper:

Hi,

The orange-brown shading makes for a strange-looking ink, no?

Many thanks for preventing an unrewarding purchase.

I actually also wanted to see it next to Toffee, so did the water test, and added Toffee & the MB Sepia from before. You may have to refresh the page.

You can order it still at Pen Boutique here, and see a photo of the bottle/box.

I love the orange-brown tones. It almost reminds me of a browner version of Sailor Red-brown.

Guess what I just happened to have in one of my trays of vials. I went back and added Sailor R-B to the Clairefontaine paper. Quite a striking difference!

Thanks for the review...I really like the "different color" shading...really interesting.

Now added to my "want list"

Is this a short time limited edition or will it be available for a while?

I think I read in the MB forum that there were a limited number of bottles being produced, and less than the number of Carlo Collodi pens, so I suspect it will quickly become unobtainum.

Also this ink has a sticker on the bottom that says made in Austria.

Sam, is that all of your samples? I would have thought you had more.

No, those were just the trays of vials in the one drawer I took out to find another ink. It is a part of what is proving to be a very effective system for keeping original bottles stored and organized, and having a large quantity quickly and easily available with the vials.

Sam, thank you for adding the Sailor Red-brown comparison. I ended up ordering two bottles from Pen Boutique last night, and they shipped today! I can't wait!

Hmmm. If my monitor conveys the colours accurately, Collodi looks alot like Toffee brown with more and lighter coloured shading.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
