Sf Pen Show Report

Recommended Posts

The pics have finally finished downloading to Flickr so without further ado I present the SF Pen Show report.

We the pen show was announced, it was clear that the Pen Posse was going to make our home show a party. For those who were there, you know we partied like there's no tomorrow.

At this point, I would normally start with pictures from Friday. However, I got up at 4:30 am to party at the Apple Store and get the new iPhone. That was a fun party. I got the phone home and did the set-up. By that time, I needed to get to the show and thus I left my camera at home. :headsmack: Thus there are no Friday pictures.

Once at the show, I was too busy shopping and socializing to go home and get the camera (I live five minutes away). So no pictures. Sure I could of used the phone and I did but I had to re-do the set-up later that evening so no phone pics. :headsmack:

But here are some pics from Saturday to give you the flavor of the show.

The main room was not that big, about a half to a third of the one in LA and much smaller than the one in DC. However this gave the show a very intimate feel and it was the first year of the new show. It will grow in time. The outer areas were used and the Pen Posse table was located outside.

Most dealers started set-up Friday morning. Set-up took a good chunk of the morning and it took a little time for things to get into full swing. Friday was surprisingly busy since it is a work day. By the mid afternoon, it was so crowded that it was hard to make your way through the aisles. The turnout from established dealers and smaller local vintage pen dealers was very good. There was a nice mix of modern and vintage pens and the attendees span a very even mix of interests.

John Mottishaw, Mike Masuyama, and Pendelton Brown all came to the show so it was a great place to your pens worked on. In addition, Victor Chen was also there working on pens as well as a few others. If you wanted some work on a pen, this was the place.

One of the best parts of the show was that our very own Ethernautrix was working for team Mottishaw. She was hawking Nakaya pens like no other. She was a force of nature and introducing people to not only Nakayas but also to FPN and Pen Posse. Of course, this meant work for me. She was calling for me all during the show to answer questions and make sure people who needed help made it to the right people. It was a lot of fun being the pen concierge.

So Friday was a great hectic day to start the show. Friday night was even better. Since this was a smaller show, the show did end as scheduled and we were all kicked out of the room. (In the bigger shows, the main room never truly clears and pen stuff continues into the wee hours). I arranged for the Pen Posse party to be Friday night (the only free night). Due to the number of people, I arranged for the whole group to go down to a local Korean BBQ for some typical Pen Posse action. Sorry no pics.

After the dinner, we returned to the hotel where some of us embarked on a BevMo run. With liquid refreshment in hand, we continued the party on one of Roger Cromwell's room at the hotel. Much of what went on at the party is NSFFPN. So sorry kids, next time come to the show. Since I got up at 4:30 that morning, I crashed and left while the party went on.

I kinda slept in on Saturday but got to the show a little after the start. A lot of familiar faces were there as well as a lot of new local pen users.

Enough of me rambling.

One of the coolest stuff at the show came from Artus pens. This is a new company out of Russia. They actually are not new but have done work for companies like Ancora. They specialize in Russian painting techniques. The pens were stunning. Maxim is very nice and traveled a long way tom show off his wares.

The highlight of Saturday was the tableholders party hosted by Roger Cromwell. Roger opened his home to a large group. The BBQ tri-tip was awesome but the special event was the Ike and Martin(http://www.ikeandmartin.com/) who played for over 6 hours. They were rockin the house. Lisa was glued to one spot the whole night singing along tot he music. They had a repertoire of over 300 songs and they played them. I don't think there was a drop of Maker's Mark left. I think the party finally ended around 3 am.

Aw, Ricky! What a great way to let those of us who couldn't make it feel like we were there (sans any hangovers). You completed my wish list, with the photo of Teri Morris (who has been good to me this year). It looks like a great gathering, and I'm so heartened you guys did, indeed, party hard.

Wow. I have to show this all to my wife and get her hooked before the LA show...

That's Roger Cromwell holding the makeshift target and the new Stallone pen. It was very fitting. The show was a blast. Hopefully, we'll make it even bigger next year.

I do this for all of the pen shows I go to. I try to give a flavor of what the pen show is like for those who can't go. These photos do not convey the fun atmosphere of the off hours events like our Korean BBQ adventure, the party in rm170 and the awesome party and music at Roger's place.

You should show your wife the LA Pen Show reports I wrote for 2010 and 2011.

The entire weekend, from the Pen Show itself to the Pen Posse and the Dealer Appreciation Dinner to the winding down with Team Mottishaw and others at the end, was SO, MUCH, FUN.

Wow. And very busy. John's table was on the more side of more-or-less non-stop. The first day, three happy (and discerning) pen aficionados walked away with a Nakaya Desk Pen, and Joi finally broke down and ordered one on Sunday. Joi, you will not regret it! (I'm telling you, I'm telling everyone, the Nakaya Desk Pen is magic. Not because it looks like a magic wand (which is cool, ha ha ha), but everyone who holds the pen -- just holds it, much less tries writing with it -- is amazed at how comfortable it it is hold. It's as if it adjusts to the writer's hand. I know! Sounds crazy! I haven't handed a Desk Pen to anyone who didn't remark on how comfortable it was.)

It was great to meet so many FPN members who have promised to show up to a Pen Posse. Does anyone want to lobby for a Nakaya Sub-Posse?

I kid!

Working with John and Jonella was fun (and busy) (very busy), and later, kicking back and chatting with them was fun, too. I'm going to keep saying fun, because no other word really captures the experience as succinctly.

Even barging into BevMo to bring back wine, port, and Laphroaig while wearing one of Kernan's Utilikilts was fun -- but not as much as drinking it.

What? Who doesn't like liquid campfire smoke?

The Dealer Appreciation Party at Roger's Penopoly House was the highlight. Ike and Martin were warming up when I walked in and heard a few notes, and I said, "Is that... Black... Lightning... Vincent... 1952?" because I was so surprised and delighted and wanted it to be so. "1952 Vincent Black Lightning?" one of them said. "Yes." "Yes." "OH GOODY!"

Oh my gee oh dee, these guys were great! I don't want to go on and on about it, because it was the Dealer dinner and not open to the public, so you know what? It was all right. You didn't miss anything. It was good. Yeah. You know, I think the dealers were happy.

But if you want to hear their version of Richard Thompson "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," come to their show in Danville on November 11 -- or come to Pen Posse. I have their CD; I will happily play it for you (and I haven't even listened to it yet; I just know I will be happy to play it for you.).

Steve got some great news. Steve makes handmade journals and was hoping to recoup the cost of the table THAT HE GENEROUSLY SHARED WITH PEN POSSE, BECAUSE HE ROCKS. Detlef from Bittner's saw them and put in an order. I won't divulge the details, but I'll repeat what Steve said, "I've been pulled out of retirement." What a great Pen Show story! HOORAY!

And thank you, Steve, for sharing your table and selling Pen Posse's pens. You deserve this huge break!

Ricky, thanks for documenting the show!

I think I am saddest that i missed out on live music! :crybaby:

Yeah, I have fallen under the Lisa Nakaya spell and have made the commitment to get my first Nakaya, after something like 10 Pilots and at least 6 Sailors and too many Platinums to count.

Pen Posse knows how to host a Pen Show! :bunny01:

Here is the only photo I took ALL WEEKEND.

This was post-show opening-day Pen Posse, after dinner at the Korean BBQ place (which was really good, even though a couple of marauders from the other table *coughRickycough* raided and pillaged our table of its... Korean tapas (I don't know the name for those little dishes of deliciousness)). (I know. We said we didn't mind, but we laughed at your pirate maneuver!)

So, in the room, we didn't have a cork screw, so I ran down the hall in Kernan's Utilikilt to the lobby and said to the lobby guy, "This kilt has scratched up my leg, and it's really bad, and also we don't have a corkscrew, do you have one we could borrow?" He let that set in and came to the rescue with a corkscrew. Rock on, lobby guy! (I returned the corkscrew, of course.)

The French wine, I was told, needed to breathe. I offered to give it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Yeah, ha ha, I'll bet oenophiles have never heard that one, ha ha, ha ha! I can't even pronounce that word.

I nursed the Laphroaig back to health, though, heck yeah!

Anyway, just wanted to share my Pen Show pictorial with y'all!

P.S. In the background on the left is a huge bottle of ink that Kernan brought. I think it's Sheaffer Blue-Black, but I don't remember.
