Nice work, Brian. You're making great progress. Your writing is markedly more confident than just a couple of months ago.

Using such a beautiful penholder, must help a bit!

Just posting my recent efforts on Ornamental Penmanship. Most of them are signatures. I hope these would be pleasing to your eyes.

hlyuki,

Aside from a few stray blots, (who can avoid them practicing?) those are some very handsome samples, nicely understated, a good sense of the aesthetic. I admire your courage emulating those last two signatures - two of the best.

Well done.

Hi Mickey,

Thank you. Just as you said these are practice sheets so it's normal to see some blots on them, moreover I am sometimes a careless guy.

After practicing so long, I still can't use my arm freely to produce those fancy Caps, everytime I write something I need to do a lot of warming-up exercises. Emulating the combinations in Signature may be a good way to gain good control of my movement, so I pick some really good ones from IAMPETH to copy.

I agree with you that F.B.Counrtney and E.A.Lupfer are two of the best OP writers. It's always interesting and inspirational to view and emulate their wonderful works.

Hi, gfs2222,

They are all done with my favourite nib Leonardt's Principal, which I also use for my Engrosser's Script.

I agree. I'm working my way through a page of majuscules written by Courtney, one letter at a time, maybe ten to fifteen minutes a day. The 'F' alone has accounted for at least a half dozen of these 1/4 hour sessions. I have inked many pages with nothing but malformed Fs. The most recent efforts were not too bad, merely bad. This is an improvement.

There is no way to coerce such letters out of the nib. One has to let go and allow the pen swing around the page. While I'm no where near equaling the beauty of his letters, the effort is paying benefits in all my other writing.

Yep, those guys were a rare breed. They wrote every day for hours. I've read that Courtney and Maddy would spend hours just trying to develop clever and unique ways to "connect" initials for signature cards; having "friendly contests" between themselves. My teacher took me to the Iampeth page tonight...showed me the "before and after" pictures of several guys. One of them was E.A.Lupfer...his "before" picture (while he was a student at the Zanerian College) was not so good...but his "after"...wow! You can see it here http://www.iampeth.com/images/Before_and_After_Lupfer.jpg

While I love them all...Baird, Courtney, Tamblyn, Howe...all of them...my fascination and admiration is currently for E.A. Lupfer. I just loved the way that guy wrote. Classic to the max! And fricking flawless. That is an age that is lost, but thank goodness their work remains for us to oogle. I plan on attending the Iampeth convention in Indiana next year. One of the things that I am most excited to see is the archive room...where they display many many original works of these men. And women...don't forget Mary Champion! I fear I will get choked up in that room and make a fool of myself...things like that "get to me" as I get older and mellower. Only a fellow lover of vintage penmanship and the dedication involved would understand. Its an age lost...so many of these great men and women who were at the top of the food chain; now gone forever. They don't even teach cursive writing in schools anymore. Thank goodness for Iampeth and the FPN and all of you good brothers for keeping the love for the art alive. I'm not so good at it, but I love it and I will continue trying!

I understand exactly. Some singers affect me that way. The first time we heard a recording of Claudia Muzio singing "O Del Mio Amato Ben," my wife and I were awash in tears by the end. I can't explain the response other than the way you have, a sense of profound loss of beauty, something gone from the world and unlikely to come again.

I agree that E. A. Lupfer was exceptionally talented. If you haven't already done so, find "Ornamental Penmanship by C.P.Zaner" on the IAMPETH site and have a look at pages 54 - 65..... wonderful.

Hiyuqi, what paper did you use for the Courtney signature – the one with the red lining? And watch out for that extra "n" in Courtney!

Why you got interested in that paper? Is there any thing special of it? It is the stationery of my university, very thin and cheap paper. Not so smooth but enought to do rapid writing. I spent most of my time practicing on it.

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b628/lovely997959/P1010058_zpsdb3293b9.jpg

Wow, really! I write an extra "n" in his name! How careless I was to do so! Thank you for pointing that out for me, I rewrite these two and hope that Mr. Courtney would forgive my mistake.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
