The Rare Ones

Can someone mention which are the Rare Vintage models of MB and hence more valuable..Pl note that the reference does not necessarily pertain to the oldest models but the rarest models...For example some models were discontinued very quickly and hence becoming more valuable than pens produced way before their time...I can think of two examples :

1) MEISTERSTUCK 138 or 139L FTN PEN ca.1930's

2) Masterpiece Green Striated 142 < 144 < 146 ca.1950's (especially if the striations were straight rather than swirled)

I have these two pens I love very much, they both write smooth and nice. I do not know if they are more valuable but I guess they are kind of rare.

- MB 138 with a very special ring and clip in the cap

- MB L 40 with a double imprint which should be some kind of manufacturing accident

If I am wrong please correct me..

Regards, Ariel

Nice pens - the 138 an aftermarket jewelers engraving I presume? Quite aztec in its looks - works well on the pen.

Show off, show off for goodness sake. :clap1: I have not seen anything other than the standard MB 138 before, which is rare enough. Thank you very much for sharing. Great thread. Keep it coming.

I would go with that one if I were you (considering where you live!). An original aztec/mayan influenced MB... :P

I reckon those engravings looks more aztec/mayan than the ones in the famous Aztec parker or even in the new Montblancs named after Mexican artists...

2) Masterpiece Green Striated 142 < 144 < 146 ca.1950's (especially if the striations were straight rather than swirled)

I think the grey is probably slightly less common than the green striated and I also understand that swirls were less often found. I haven't trawled the German pen shows though or spent many years repairing/servicing as some members here have. I also believe that the 132 is probably rarer than the 138 or 139. Just picked one of them up incidentally...

Here is my grey 146 with BB nib and swirled pattern. I also have a lovely EF grey 142 - will be patient and save for the 144! There was a nice brown striated 244 on eBay yesterday - went quite cheap I thought ($750 or so). Not cheap pens of course.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
