Update: been emailing back and forth with Angela from nibs.com. I am going with the long kuro and ruthenium nib combo. Unfortunately, they have neither an F or an M in stock in ruthenium, and it will be another month until they get some more in. Which is fine, I've wanted a Nakaya for years now, I can want one for another month. They do have a rhodium nib in stock in F, but since I'm going for an overall dark feel I think the more muted appearance of the ruthenium is worth waiting for. Plus this gives me another month to waffle over whether to get the F or M nib. :bunny01:

Did I say another month? Turns out they misread something, and the ruthenium nibs will be in next week instead! So I went ahead and committed to the M nib. So hopefully I'll have my new pen soon. I'm hoping to put up a review after I've spent some time with it.

So again thank you all for the help.

Congratulations on your impending (pun intended) purchase! Just to add to your anticipation, I'll add a couple of photos. These are my Neo Standards in heki-tamenuri and kuro-tamenuri.

I debated on gold or ruthenium finish for the kuro-tamenuri and eventually decided on gold. I'll be interested to see a photo of yours once you receive it.

Those are gorgeous pens, geoduc!!! What nibs do you have in them? And I agree it will be fun to see some pics and get a reaction from Johnson when his pen comes in.

Thanks, David. They're broad nibs that I had John Mottishaw grind into stubs bordering on cursive italic. The heki-tamenuri nib is 0.7mm adjusted for medium flow and the kuro-tamenuri is just slightly finer and slightly wetter. Both are wonderful writers.

A quick OFF TOPIC!

Naw-ice guitar, Dude-!! Who built that beauty? Looks like a Gibson or a PRS, maybe - but, the old-style humbuckers, body edge and neck-binding, oversize frets, ebony fingerboard make it appear to be an "old" one, for sure, man!

I hope that she gets some good play-time!

Congratulations on your purchase!

I have a danitrio densho in plain black urushi as well as a chinese lacquer, black olympio (ST Dupont). The appearance does depend on the light ... but in indoor, natural lighting, the depth of the finish can well be appreciated. You do need to know what you're looking for but I certainly appreciate it. And I also appreciate that it does not look as gaudy as say a solid vermeil pen in daily use.

I've always wanted the other coloured finishes but alas, they're on the 'to buy in future' list.

In Rotation: MB 146 (EF), Noodler's Ahab bumblebee, Edison Pearl (F), Sailor ProGear (N-MF)

In storage: MB 149 (18k EF), TWSBI 540 (B), ST Dupont Olympio XL (EF), MB Dumas (B stub), Waterman Preface (ST), Edison Pearl (0.5mm CI), Noodler's Ahab clear, Pilot VP (M), Danitrio Densho (F), Aurora Optima (F), Lamy 2000 (F), Visconti Homo Sapiens (stub)

thanks for sharing! if i am pleased with the upcoming nakaya, chances are I'll put a plain black urushi pen on the "to buy" list, maybe for sometime in 2012. i have such an affinity for black pens.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am waiting on a Black Long Piccolo from Nibs.com, ordered clipless, dual tone medium nib being worked into a free writing cursive italic / stub by John. Had great conversations with Angela to decide. I thought about the Kuro, but went with straight black as I have a Blue Dragon on order that's at least a month away.

Second day of using my new Nakaya Black Long Piccolo cigar with a cursive Italic care of John Mottishaw and Angela at Nibs.com. A truely excellent writer.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
