As it is the same nib I suspect the difference is all about the feel in the hand and the visual aesthetic. I like them too, but as I now have an 823 I have doubts about putting money toward the 845. Still, you never know!

I do wonder if the nibs on their higher end pens get a little more tlc. I get this impression with Sailor sometimes.

Perhaps, and I've only got this single example, but I do wonder how the nib on my 823 can possibly be made to feel any better. It's already superb!

I have both pens. The 823 is a workhorse, while the 845 is more elegant. The feel of the urushi makes a huge difference. The extra ink capacity of the 823 is not that important to me. I do prefer the medium nib on the 823 to the Waverley nib on the 845--I thought it would be the opposite. Both nibs write perfectly and have never needed any adjustment.

Now I'm curious to try this pen. I have and love my 823. Curious what you 845 aficionados prefer about it over the 823, besides the urushi of course.

It is wider and easier to grip than 823. It is lighter than 823. It doesn't need to be posted. You don't have to worry about opening the breather hole. I have both in F nib and they both write equally great.

I think of my FPs as my children.

I'm shocked that you weren't more impressed with the WA nib. I have a #10 WA nib on one of my PCH912s and it's incredible - while it's not my fanciest nib, it's definitely my best writer!

 

An 845 with WA would be my dream pen if I could just get used to Pilot's "ball clip." I'm more a fan of the sword style clip on the Custom Heritage & Falcon pens. It's weird to me that the 845 has the blunt ends of the Custom Heritage series but the ball clip of the Custom series.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning.
