2442 Nib Questions

I was interested in trying a fine stub nib with one of my Esty J's. Does anyone have a writing sample with the 2442? Will it provide line variation for a R handed user?

I unfortunately have no writing sample, but my 2442 might be my favorite Estie nib I own. I'm right-handed and I'm happy with the line variation.

I too would love to see this. I have actually ordered one of these nibs and may try to show it off even with my lousy handwriting. What this post was really for... Bump

Well I was interested in getting a stub nib for my Estys. I ended up buying a 2442. While it's a great writing nib, in my hand it seems to have almost no line variation at all. I've tried holding it in every manner I can think of...still no line variation. I'll try to post a writing sample when I get a chance.

I recently won a Esterbrook with a 2442 Nib on it, and am still trying to figure out how to write with it. It is definitely cut at a slant, almost an oblique, that would favor a left handed writer. When I write with it in my right hand it is very smooth, but very very wet, with a medium to broad line. Very little variation in the line as well. Definitely not the stub style I was looking for. However, when I turn it upside down and write reverse, it has line variation and looks like a stub writer. But its also scratchy. Is this this normal for 2442s?

 

The Pen is also much smaller and thinner than my other Esties, being only 4.5" in length when its capped. In contrast, my favorite is a black Estie that is 4 7/8s capped, and much thicker.

@ Gutbucketeer -- Sounds as if the pen you got was an SJ size, rather than a full sized J. The nib units will be interchangeable, but the SJs are smaller pens.

As for the 2442 nib, I have one but haven't tried it -- most of my Esties need to be resacced and that falls under "copious amount of free time...."

When I started looking at Esterbrooks I saw that the 2442 was recommended for left handed writers. Being left handed, I bought one and tried it out. I didn't find it particularly suited to me. I thought it was about like any other stub. The nib was NOS in a box. I tried a couple of other 2442s, NOS. Most were a bit wet writing, and, as a lefty over writer, I don't get a lot out of pushing my left hand through wet ink. I think it is a good nib for the right handed writer, though. Then again I can't write right handed.
