Twsbi: Stop Holding Your Breath

Dear Speedy,

Will the 540 be available in colors or clear only? If colors, what colors? I missed out on a green or blue 530. I would like to get a green or blue 540. And when will the italic nib be available? Thank you. If there were still members of the Sheaffer or Parker families with your spirit alive, they would not be out of business in America.

He came down from heaven and was made man.

Not to get all Geo-politically-analytical, but if Americans in general had the spirit Americans had three or so generations back, there would be no national debt.

Thank goodness Speedy has a true spirit to create and be successful! We all benefit from that. :)

I'm don't know what armchair philosophy you are spewing, but if you are suggesting that if Americans worked harder, we wouldn't have a national debt, you're talking out of your proverbial end cap. Productivity is far higher than it was fifty years ago. There are a lot of reasons for the size of the US debt, but it is not because American workers aren't productive enough and it isn't because of a lack of entrepreneurial spirit, either. When I read provocative generalizations like the one above, I can't let it pass without commenting.

For the record, it was the ubiquitous, cheap disposable ballpoint that quickly changed the fortunes of fountain pen manufacturers, not a lack of productivity or innovation. Do I wish that BIC/Sheaffer were still manufacturing celluloid fountain pens in Fort Madison? You bet I do, but that's another story.

PM'ed you in reply to the main body of your post.

For the record I completely agree with you, fountain pens in the US fell by the wayside because of the BP. The market has been dry for a long time, and in the US at least, I never anticipate them to make a real 'comeback', that market, again, went dry decades ago. But I do think it is funny that many people who adore FPs also are very tech savvy. It goes to show some things can be timeless. I will enjoy the niche.

Looking forward to buying (at least) one of the small postable 540s :)

WB Speedy!

Wait, the 540 is going to be postable??? That's my only complaint about the 530; I'd be keeping it rather than waiting to hit my 30 posts to list it on the classifieds if only the 530 would post.

NO, the 540 share same outside as 530 so both of them are not recommended for posting, But Diamond mini (I think we should call it this name) you can post.

rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the clarification, speedy. Where would I find pictures, dimensions and colors for the mini? How about the 700, will it be postable? Sorry to be a bother as I'm sure this has all had ample discussion before, it's just hard to find what with all of the TWSBI conversations and praise going on here at FPN.

#21 & #83 has the dimension

This thread is doing NOTHING for my self-control! (Who am I kidding...if I had a shred of self-control I wouldn't even be on this site!

My last purchase was my first TWSBI. No one has been able to pry it out of my hand since. I love love LOVE this thing! It replaced my Lamy Al-Star as my workhorse pen, and I am contemplating a B nib for the husband for Christmas.

But then I see the Baby Diamond - my husband was saying he wanted a pocket pen. And the 700...it might be a good choice for my first vac. And then you start whispering about a retractable? This is too much!

Speedy, much praise to you for your wonderful work. :notworthy1: Take all the time you need ironing out those problems. We will be here, prancing around like Labrador Retrievers waiting for a treat.

Best wishes from another happy customer...

I second all this! retractables, minis, and italics...oh my! Speedy you ARE the coolest guy on the pen scene. Fantasies do come true!

speaking of the bottle, speedy, those blemishes are hardly enough for me not to buy them. if the plastics cannot be reshaped, sell the "bad" ones for a discount and save a total loss of the product. consider me first in line! love your work.

the bottle is made by of glass.

I cannot let product out with twsbi name if it is not to my satisfaction otherwise I will wallbash.gif

How about sell the blemished ones at a discount, and mark with a Sharpie before the TWSBI name "THIS IS NOT A" :D

After we launch clear one we will start prepare the color one, initially we will pick 3 or 4 out of the 530 colors.

I believe some of them may had the spirit, but just ball point invention, market side shrink, manufacturing cost increase forced them not able to continue the operation, plus being merged by big corporation, management team decide to outsource instead of home made, eventually loosing the leading technology on production knowledge....

Globalization make different type of centers; design center (then of course, fashion, consumer electronic goods...), production center (world factory??), financial center... shifting around the world. some times not you don't want to, but you have no control. twsbi just happen to be located in the production center of hardware, if i am in other places, even I want to, I won't be able to achieve it.

maybe everything just moving too fast for the past 100 years, 4.5 billion years of earth history could be ruined by us??

Well, let's slow down a little bit, take out 30 minutes, 1 hours everyday from type computer, write with good old fountain pen, open the window, breath some fresh air, not air condition.thumbup.gif

Words of wisdom. It is good we can remember, recognize, and admire the spirit and ideal of high quality workmanship. It matters less who does it than it being done with such perfection and dedication.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

I have looked at the High resolution image of the "bad finish" glass bottles and I must admit that although it is not as superb as the "good finish" the quality is still substantially better than quite a few glass inkwells I have seen for sale.

I understand your high level of perfectionism and the feeling that you do not want to sell substandard products. However I am sure that many memebrs here feel that even with those minor flaws they are substantially superior to many products available. I think that you could definitely shift some of the lower quality bottles as "seconds" to many members on this forum who are purely chasing storage containers for their inks. Maybe they could be sold with a disclaimer that they will not be resold my the purchasers.

BTW I absolutely love my Diamond 530 and I have purchased a couple for friends as gifts who think they are some of the nicest pens they have seen and used. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your new lines.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
