Inks With A "sheen"

Recommended Posts

I have some old cartridges of Parker Penman Sapphire and I was noticing a pretty nice sheen to it as I was using it today. I'm sure this ink is slightly concentrated at this point due to some evaporation, but still rather nice.

Not the best photos, but hopefully it shows the sheen.

Dang, none of my Callifolio inks looked that pretty!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

It took me soooo long to realize that tracing paper is actually "onion skin" paper what I always wanted to try.
I've been using this paper for drafting only until yesterday! I tried the thicker one, and even a dip nib can't bleed trough it.
It is just amazing with fp inks! Sheen everywhere!

As I understand it, sheen comes from the evaporation of the ink where it crystallizes at the border. So for sheen you want a low absorbent material, leaving time to evaporate. A glass plate would probably be ideal :)

I use heavy tracing paper, but I had good success with bakery/parchment paper I got from the kitchen. Dig around and see if it works for you.

I have tried lighter tracing paper too. I have rolls in A4 and A3 size, but those bleed through easily.

This one is much heavier. I don't know the brand(or weight) because I only buy sheets when I need to, but I'll find it out.

I used this thicker ones to draft floorplans and such, but this was the first time I've used fountain pens on it.

Any art supply store should carry individual sheets or pads of vellum paper, which is supposed to replicate what those monks and scribes wrote on in ye goode olde days.

Wait... in the US onion skin IS NOT tracing paper any more. Onion Skin is amazing... no longer readily available and quite pricey. Tracing paper is fun, but more prone to bleed through and does not show that amazing sheen. You can get that kind of sheen only on vellum and onion skin. The next best thing is Tomoe River paper.

Well, you aren't in the US, it might be onion skin. Onion skin paper is amazing and if I could find it cheap, I'd use it. Thanks for showing this to us!

What's in a name? Apparently a whole lot! Non-porous, coated, non-absorbant paper let's ink show it's sheen. Ever since my first glimpse of an illuminated manuscript, I was hooked on the words and images and the light made by the gold. For me it is spiritual.

Any thing particular to look for when hunting vellum paper at my local a&c store? Brands, paper weights, key words that reference coating, etc.?

If you can find onion skin at any reasonable price - buy it. I can send you tracing paper - it can be found at the 99 Cents store right now. I have it cut in half because it is an odd size. The vellum paper I bought before was made for Michaels but I bought it at Paperworks.com. You are really looking for that clear stuff. Onion skin is the MOST sheeny paper you will find.

Thank you! I will be on the lookout for the onion skin paper if I can find any!

My kids have some generic tracing paper maybe I can take a sheet or two and check it out.

So vellum is different than tracing paper, correct?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
