Many thanks. I checked with Global Rakuten, and they say that they do not ship to the US. I did find the notebooks on Cool-Japan on Ebay, and ordered a few from there. Thanks again!

I am glad you said what you said, migo984; that means I am not crazy, did not get a defective bottle, and regardless of my pen and penmanship and paper, and the humidity around me, wind speed, zodiac sign, and what my mood ring says it does not sheen so much I have to wear sunglasses to write with Emerald de Chiver. I bought Emerald of Chiver and the first blurp out of my pen was just fantastic. 3 colors of sheen at one time. What a great ink...until I started to write with it. Practically no sheen at all. It's a nice verdigris color, but if it were only that I would not have bought it. It shades a bit, nothing to point out especially, along with Stormy Grey which I am tired of. I will probably sell them for a big discount.* As the French say, Taunte Pis. I hope the Diamine shiny ones are good.

*I love Rouge Hematite though, and don't get tired of it. I think the red and gold go well together, and the shine stays through a whole tank full. Emerald loses its sheen right away and does not get it back, and Stormy Grey would have looked much better as a black with silver particles. Rouge Hematite is excellent at the holidays!

Has anyone seen Goulet's list of the top shiners? I agree with most, but I myself would have a different list. I suspect ALL of us would have a different list...

Since they're not selling Sailor, there are quite many ink that's missing. For exemple, some of the Season inks. Edited by AndyYNWA

All 8 of them have sheen! Some more prominent than others, some not so visible in normal writing though.

Exactly right. Souten, for example, is one of the great sheeners.

Sky High (Souten's double).. and one that sheens so much it looks more purple than blue (to me).. is Shocking Blue.. Which Goulet don't carry either.

Man, am I alone in considering the Herbin 1670 inks with glitter in them not as high on the sheening charts as folks seem to be suggesting, because the glitter is sort of faux/cheaty sheen? When I think of an ink's sheen, I think of that natural sheen that makes inks like Diamine Majestic Blue and Sargasso Sea, and Sailor Yama Dori so special? Well okay, their color does a pretty good damn job of making them special, but that sheen is so damn pretty! As opposed to glitter, which makes me think that maybe the ink got a lap dance at a strip club or something.

I know what you're saying, but I have found that the inks are truly beautiful in themselves, and actually have a great sheen without the sparkles.

If you don't shake the bottle and load the pen from the ink at the top of the bottle without pulling in the sparkly bits, you'll see that the ink by itself is really great. At least Rouge Hematite and the new Emeraude de Chivor are breathtaking, in my opinion.

Understood, and yes migo984, you may be correct that quality control may have been minimized in their rush for the début of the ink. All I can add is that since it is a rather heavy ink, it really looks best with a broad or stub nib (the top ¶ uses a Levenger True Writer with broad nib, and the lower ¶ is a Jinhao that has been modified with an "Artified" stub nib), and one that lays down a lot of ink.

Additionally, the paper I'm using is one of the "sheeniest" I've ever used: it's a lovely little notebook made for Kobe Inks (photos of each of the colors are on the front and back covers), of lovely cream-colored paper with graph lines. I would love to know who makes this paper, because it has the best qualities of Tomoe River paper, but is a little bit heavier, which I like all the more.

For those having sheen trouble with Emerald of Chivor (little sheen on ink resistant paper like Tomoe River): I've found that the wetter the nib the better. As an experiment, multiple stroke your lettering as you go to get a little ink wetness on the paper and let dry. If that works for sheen, consider using a wetter nib. If it didn't work, then maybe there is variance. I have a couple broad and stub nibs that are stingy with ink and won't sheen well. The width helps, but only if it's juicy. Good luck!

I have never ever seen the tiniest bit of sheen with my sherwood green. Gonna have to have a serious talk with that ink. :(

Well they listed Alt-goldgrun, but I don't think this one ever sheens.

Yeah, that really makes me boggle. It's one of my most matte inks. I even tried it in my Omas 360 Magnum which lays down such a concentrated/wet line it's a sheen monster, on Tomoe River paper and not a hint of it. I wonder if they had some kind of overstock situation and wanted to try and push some of it off of the shelves with dubious claims of sheen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
