New Platinum 3776

Platinum will release new 3776 named Motosu. Its cap has perfect airtightness.

Motosu is one of five lakes at the foot of Mt. Fuji and its transparency is the most outstanding

among the five lakes. Of course 3776 is the height of Mt.Fuji.

I tried contacting the local pen sellers, but they said all of the pens are fully booked and reserved.

I hope they introduce this new cap into their regular lineup. Anyone know how it works? From the photos, it looks like the inner cap is spring loaded and creates a vacuum by venting air out the top of the cap (probably a one-way valve there to keep air from flowing back in). Pretty cool.

From what i understand, the motosu is going to be a prelude to another new pen, the Century. The Motosu will be limited to 2011 pieces, and will be released in July. The Century should be a normal production pen, that will probably have the new slip and seal mechanism too, and this will be out in Sept.

I really like the motosu look but not sure if i should be forking out for a limited ed... maybe i should just go for the Century instead?

Please check out my blogshop for fountain pens and inks at http://inkoholicanonymous.blogspot.com/ Reviews of my pens can be found there too!

Yep, it just arrived in the US this week. Very cool looking! We'll have some next week!

I don't know how much the regular Century will be (or if it will have a gold nib like this, or steel like some of the other 3776's), but I do know this LE Motosu demonstrator will list for $250, with choice of fine, medium, or broad 14K nib.

With the Plasir (sp?) and this pen I think Platinum are addressing an issue which causes many people to find fountain pens impractical. Most people don't write very much anymore. It's not a given that a pen will be picked up and used every day. It doesn't take many days unused for many pens to have a startup issue.

If it works, way to go Platinum!

I will go to Itoya in Ginza, Tokyo and have one today. I will show you some pictures after that.

Take a look at this image of the old section, taken from the review by hsianloon:

Compare it with the image from Platinum's page about the Motosu:

http://www.platinum-pen.co.jp/img/motosu_16-2.jpg

They appear to have changed the shape of the section so that the inner cap will be wedged against the section, rather than butting up flat aginst it. Rokurinpapa san, I'd be interested to know how the inner cap mates with the section, as I think that's where the clever bit really lies.

Some pictures.

Regarding the new hermetic cap seal system of 3776 MOTOSU,

when the grip section comes into contact with the inner cap, the cap

moves together with the grip section.

The new nib is also developped to improve the inkflow.

It is disappointing that the converter remains as before, so the gold

of the converter does not match with the silver of MOTOSU.

I may post the review of this pen in the future.

Thanks for the excellent pictures Rokurinpapa. The feeder also looks like a new design as compared to the usual 3776 plastic feeder.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Thanks Rokurinpapa-san. The second image shows what's going on well enough: it should give a pretty good seal when new. Interesting system: it works on a similar principle to Australian milkbottles. They don't have the spring, but they do have the wedge shape to greate a plastic on plastic seal.

Edit to ask: what's that grey metallic looking thing visible in the section in the last photo?

It is a half- cylindrical hollow of the feeder.

And a trick of the light. Thanks, Rokurinpapa san. I look forward to reading your review, once you've given the pen a bit of a work-out.

That little springy plastic cap looks similar to what they use in the Preppy's.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
