Diamine Cmyk Inks

Hi!

I'm planning to start a colour chart based on CMYK mixing, and I think the diamine inks are the cheapest option in my country, so...

What do you think are the most exact inks in the diamine range? I have choosen these, but i'm not pretty shure:

Magenta: Diamine Cerise (Maybe too pink?)

Cyan: Diamine Mediterranean Blue (Maybe too dark?)

Yellow: Ok, Diamine Yellow is perfect yellow :D)

Black: Onyx or Quartz? Which one is the most saturated?

Thanks brian for the awesome swabs!

Hi,

I suggest their Deep Magenta.

The Yellow is problematic: the majority of the 'normal' Yellow inks are rather dark and have a Brown/Amber tint. Both of those characteristics seem to support using the ink on its own: increasing legibility. I have found more success using the Noodler's hi-lite ink, Firefly.

Cyan is very tricky: many of the Blue inks are far too Blue too be used as a Cyan, so I suggest looking at the Turquoise inks.

With Diamine, a gap between the name and the colour is not uncommon, so let your eye do its thing.

I do not use Black FP ink, but be aware that many Black inks are not neutral Black. I believe that one would need to go to a carbon particle ink to get a neutral Black. I await the sage opinion of the Black ink aficionadi to chime-in.

Also, if you are not totally committed to using Diamine, I believe that Noodler's had some inks picked that comprised a CMYK approach. IIRC, that also included the Whiteness of the Whale (Pequod) for tone tuning.

For reference, I have included a Grey Scale LINK which shows CMYK swatches. I suggest matching your inks to those swatches.

Bye,

I can't help on the Diamine choices, but here's the previously mentioned thread on Noodler's CMYK.

I see small differences in the scan, not very much.

I have Diamine Havasue, Mediterranean and Yellow myself. Their yellow is a nice bright clear yellow, I'm no expert at mixing, but it looks perfect to me. Havasue Turquoise is greener than Mediterranean blue. Mediterranean looks close to the cyan in the color bar Sandy1 posted.

Just going by the online swabs, what about Diamine Scarlet for Magenta?

I, too, see a difference, but it is very minor.

In the diamine web page, the swab for the scarlet is clearly too pink.

But the deep magenta is a little dark...

Hi,

If your colours are incorrect, all is for naught. i.e. If one starts in a bad place, then its hard to get to a good place. But you'll still get some nice mixes - just not CMYK 'system' mixes.

Kindly consider diluting the Deep Magenta to get the right density.

Bye,

Exact match is not necessary. As Sandy mentioned, they will still give you a nice mixes. I would start with bright, BRIGHT, ink initially, because the more you mix, the muddier it gets. If you get a cyan that is not green enough, than your magenta could be more pink/red than purple.

Also, when people think about magenta, the colors they imagine are probably different.

If I ever finish my review in Scandinavian of Diamine, one of my main recommendations will be precisely this - to use them for mixing.

Unless I have a mislabeled batch, Scarlet is definitely wrong.

The choices are Yellow, Dark Magenta or Crimson, Aqua or Turquoise. All of these will work.

The amount of ink used will affect the results, but to my eye Dark Magenta gives a better red than Crimson when mixed with Yellow. It also gives a less purple blue when mixed with Aqua/Turquoise.

Aqua and Turquoise seem very similar. I think Aqua gives a slightly greener green when mixed with Yellow.

Jet Black is much blacker than the grey Quartz. For mixing perhaps it is better to use the lighter Quartz, but this I have not tried (yet).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
