My 215 Piston Stuck

Hi guys

I have a 215. I filled this with my own mix of two Diamine inks (royal blue and monaco red to make a deep purple) and wrote with it till it ran out. It was stood empty for no more than a couple of days but when I came to flush it to refill it, the piston was very stiff. So stiff, that when I tried to operate it by twisting the knob, it popped the mechanism out of the back of the barrel! This has appeared to have damaged the double "lips" that hold the mechanism in the barrel. I have cleaned the pen thoroughly now, and vowed not to use that mix again!

Why I am here is to ask whether this is fatal to the pen? Will it weaken the fit of the mechanism and barrel? I can see how the thing fits back together, and have some silicone grease for the piston whilst it's apart, but should I send it to a fixer?

any help would be welcome thanks

Graham

Yes due to the damaged ridges it is already weakened. However IMHO it not needed to send to a repairer/Pelikan warranty just yet. If you take care that ink does not dry out in the pen(even the ink sticking to the barrel walls drying out is enough to jam the mechanism), the chances of a repeat episode are remote.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

If it's still under warranty, my first thought is to see whether Pelikan will fix it themselves, it doesn't sound like you did anything that shouldn't be covered.

If that doesn't work, you could try fixing it yourself (carefully so you don't make anything worse), and if you have trouble, send it to a pen fixer (I believe Oxonian is in the UK).

Thanks for the input guys, I will be certain to avoid drying out the ink in this one from now on! It is still under warranty, and I have used the services of Oxonian for nibwork previously and was very pleased with the result. I am not good with paperwork, but will see if I can find the the warranty docs out. I'll give it a try as is, and go from there.

Hi Graham,

Once the fragile axial holding ridges are damaged the piston assembly will pop out easily.

This is a well known problem on the modern M200-M600 Pelikan series.

Avoiding any risks the piston assembly pops out one also has to be very carefull when turning the piston fully down !

Never turn the piston brusqely down till it blocks on the section.

The only effective cure is installing a new piston housing, I expect Pelikan will do this under guarantee.

Alternatively one can solve the problem by applying shellac on the ridges, creating an extra holding feature.

I suggest however to contact Pelikan first.

Thanks for the input, Francis. I have contacted Pelikan to see what they can do for me. If I had had more about me at the time, I would have taken the nib assembly out and filled the body with water to soak it for a while to loosen the piston. We live and we learn.

The axial ridges seem very soft, no wonder it is a well-known problem! I will be careful when filling from now on.

thanks again

Graham

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
