When I Grow Up, I Want To Be Just Like Papa Genkai

This one is not for sale as it is not a complete pen, but rather, Danitrio is toying with a more user friendly Little Genkai. Genkai is great if you want a large pen, but it is not a pen for folks with smaller hand. This little Genkai retains the shape of Genkai, but a tad smaller than the Mikado when capped. The major difference with this compare to Takumi and Densho is that this pen will use the larger nib used in Mikado and big Genkai. So for folks who like their nibs big and not afraid to show it, this offers a good option. Like Densho, this pen will be Japanese ED with safety shut off.

So, let me know what you think.

Here is the pen next to the big papa:

Next to big papa Genkai, uncapped, same size nib. Shorter and slimmer:

Next to Mikado:

When uncapped, it's about the same length, but not as fat and section is thinner and slightly tapered. Quite nice in the hand

Between two pens you know: MB 149 on left, MB 146 on right:

And, uncapped:

I like it. I would never consider buying a Genkai because it is just too large, but this one might work.

What is the section diameter? Anywhere close to the Takumi?

The section diameter is about 1.2cm across, but since most likely you will be holding the pen where there is slight tapper, it's more like 1 to 1.1cm.

Papa Genkai is the best pen for calligraphy or writing pleasure. The green Byakudan nuri Genkai enlightens my life. Thanks for Kevin's kind help. Since little Genkai uses the same nib,I am looking forwards to his coming. Papa Genkai is private. Little Genkai like 149 can be used in more occasions.

Hi Winedoc,

I love the short pen, it is a good idea. Will it be available with a clip? Is a raw version possible?

Thanks!

Hari

That's a great idea. Make it available in raw ebonite, please.

ABSOLUTELY SMASHING IDEA!

Keeps all the Genkai spirit and most important, the feed and nib combo, while being much more practical. Gives also a perfect base with enough surface for any artwork. Congrats for the idea, sure it will have a good future...

Very handsome pen, Kevin. Sure wish I could use these bigger pens. Even this one too large for little me.

Wonderful idea! The little Genkai looks to be a much more "reasonable" sized pen. A pen that you could carry around where the "Papa" just looks too big. Keep us in the loop on any progress.

This is my absolute favourite shape of pen so of course I'm going to say I like it. Large nib, ED filler, straight lines - what's not to like!

Personally, I don't carry my clipless pens - they all stay at home. So if this is to be a more practical version, the option of a clip would be great.

Hi Soki,

I will take more photos with other pens include Takumi this weekend when I have more time. Since Takumi is about the size of MB 149, so should give you some preliminary ideas.

I will ask about the raw version. most likely will be clipless as these are intended for maki-e and urushi work, but I'll ask. The pen is designed not for posting, so I find the length and girth just right and I don't have big hands. Don't get me wrong, I love the Papa Genkai but for longer writing period, this will be more usefual as it will still have tons of ink and my hands will not tired as easily.

Raw and clipless. I'm hooked! Will follow-up with you at the Pen Show mid-month.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
