... Zequenz Notebook Part 2 ...

Recommended Posts

This is a review of a Zequenz 360o Roll Up Journal but in Reporter style (or Landscaped)

I decided to post this review bcos this journal is not stated in the flyer nor insert.

The paper here is also different - it is thinner.

(someone correct me if I am wrong)

Packaging

Shrink wrapped, but you notice the advertsing card is missing (bcos this size is not listed amongst the different sizes available).

(see my other review of the mini sized version)

The magnetic bookmark is same size as the mini.

The binding as you can see is on the short end of the book.

But the orientation of the stamped logo shows that it is a reporter format of a binding, ie its meant to be used with the binding on top as I will demonstrate later.http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF3929.jpg

Dimensions

This is the part where it starts to differ from the 4 stated sizes.

Its NOT the mini size. Its a little wider.

Here it is shown in comparison with the Mini size , ie 9cm x 14cm as I have reviewed earlier.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF3914.jpg

This little flyer is inserted within the pages of the journal.

Its the same as found in other sized journals.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF3926.jpg

But this reporter size is not mentioned anywhere in this flyer nor in the illustrations.

The Paper / Ink tests

The paper is noticeably thinner compared to the Mini Size.

The Mini size blank pages are 100gsm.

So my guess for this thinner paper is 70gsm, since Zequenz uses only these two paper grammage.

the texture and colour and quality of the paper seems to be the same. very smooth as well.

.... and now some test with ink and watercolour washes...

This is a pageful of an ink sketch done with the Rosetta FP and Noodler's Black.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4216.jpg

The single coloured toothpick is done with kid's acrylic paint.

The acrylic is thick enuf to cover over the black ink.

The reverse page looks fine by me. I am impressed with Noodlers Black

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4218.jpg

This is the coloured pencil colour wash test

using ECOLINE bottled watercolours

Reverse page suffering from heavy watercolour gone over a few times

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4212.jpg

This is a test of ECOLINE watercolor washed over the ink sketch

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4213.jpg

The reverse page suffering from a very wet brush (intentional)

The black specks are the imprint from the toothpick sketch.

So you may want to take precautions by not having anything important on the reverse page that may suffer from this.

This one is done with kid's acrylic paint over the Noodler's ink.

A tryout of some blending in the colors

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4222.jpg

Washing over many times with acrylic paint.

It dissolves some of the black ink.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4223.jpg

The reverse page .

here it shows quite OK bcos the brush was kept dry as possible.

Some warpage of the paper is expected bcos this paper is only 70gsm if I am correct.. So not a problem here.

Thicker papers don't warp that much.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4224.jpg

The format of this journal is interesting bcos you can do this.

Especially when doing a thumbnail sketch on a walkabout.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4225.jpg

With the added "roll up " feature, you can do this ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4226.jpg

The only thing left is to find ink that can withstand perspiration or moisture from a drizzle outdoors.

So far I am happy with Noodlers' Black.

I am not sure if this is bulletproof.

I am not too conversant with inks.

I find this format rather appealing bcos I can write without any obstruction to my writing hand like so - in landscaped format...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/Zequenz%20Mini%20Landscape%20360%20Roll%20Up%20Journal/DSCF4219.jpg

The Sailor Red Brown ink above poses bleedthru problems.

Probably bcos of the formula and the dyes used.

The interesting thing is that there are some more odd sizes I saw in this Zequenz 360o range.

I didn't buy them cos i had no use for them. They were tiny - like credit card size.

And one was even 2inch x 2inch square tiny !!!

I couldn't find the dot grid type as advertised.

That should be highly useful.

wow...where did you find this size? it irks me they won't just use 100gsm paper, but w/ ef and f nibs, the 70gsm is still better than most molies :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
