This is a review of a ZEQUENZ 360o Roll Up Journal

My copy is a chilli red in colour ( I saw black and I don't know what other colours are available).

Its the smallest size at 9cm wide x 14cm tall.

I bought it becos :

1) to see for myself why it was award winning;

2) heard about some positive comments on internet;

3) its size is backpocket friendly;

4) no fear of sitting down with it remaining in backpocket bcos of its claims to be '360deg roll up'

5) the price was affordable ,

6) most importantly the paper passed my first cursory inspection that it was not inferior quality paper.

(not thin, not roughish, and it was smoother than normal smooth :D )

Pictured with a ROSETTA North Star <M> Cursive Italic (custom) by our fellow FPNer Pendleton Brown

(this FP has become my replacement sketchpen :D )

Yup !

The cover is kinda PVC like. Not sure what it is , but it is not uncommon.

Doesn't really stay flat open , especially in first third of book.

I think its perfect binding , ie glue binding , not stitched

SOME INK TESTS

This DELTA DolceVita Stub is not that wet.

So this accounts for why the reverse page is pretty unaffected.

You can see the faint shadow though, but its not that distracting.

The wet nib was pressed hard on the paper at the start of the word 'C'.

Some bleedthru

Some probs with this one.

Not sure if its due to the Sailor Red Bwn ink or the <FA> nib that is flexy and can push out a lot of ink when depressed. I did that in my usual writing pressure.

Reverse page . Pretty decent, considering the very white paper and very black ink.

With the ROSETTA North Star

WATERCOLOUR (SKETCH) WASH TEST

I usually do such a test in my journals bcos I enjoy sketching every now and then.

This sketch is purpose done for this review

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/DSCF3826.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/DSCF3827.jpg

Reverse side

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/DSCF3830.jpg

Not too bad.

I didn't wash dry.

I laid a very wet brush especially in the shadow area.

I don't mind the bleedthru or the sacrifice of one page for a sketch.

Some other sketches

The magnetic pagemarker can be annoying ..

so this is my assessment for improvement.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/DSCF3833.jpg

Its my next 'how-to-make..." tutorial (ahem ....  )

This one tests the wash over the black ink

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/P1070004.jpg

CONCLUSION

I am pretty pleased with this Journal.

The paper is decent for FPs AND washes.

Its affordable - I paid only SGD$8.90

Its backpocket friendly.

It doesn't have a pocket but you can make one inside it.

Watch out for the magnetic strip it can damage your credit cards.

I haven;t tested it but I don't want to test that !!!

If you need it to keep its shape whilst carrying it around, you can do this ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Zequenz%20notebook/P1070001.jpg

I used a large rubber band - the type that mailmen use.

This notebook gets my vote

(none other commercially available journals on the shelves have gotten my acceptance)

I am impressed. :D

This paper in this journal is 100gsm as specified in the back flyer.

But its not the same for the larger journals. I wonder why ? (maybe it will become difficult to roll)

The number of pages is also alot = 85sheets as specified. multiplied by 2 writing pages per sheet. its a lot.

Enjoy yours. :D

Feel free to add useful info if you have experience with this journal. :D

I think I have tried every pocket book ever made and am now using the made-from-recycled MECUM (Italian) and a Leuchtturm 1917. So I'm not in the market for yet another pocket notebook. But my goodness (insert more colorful expletive here) what a review! Anyone for thoroughness? Thank you.

Edit was made to correct: "made from recycled Italian MECUM." No recycled Italians were used in the making of the MECUM. To my knowledge.

Zenith Paper Company in Thailand makes them. They have a web site. I would imagine you could get them locally in Singapore. If you have access to Amazon.com you can order them there. For us stateside, they are shipped out of Washington State, Not Thailand. officesupplygeek. did a review in June or so also. But certainly not this labour and photo intensive. jnforat and I are using them in NM and found them as usable as the OP did. Have a great Thanksgiving, Jim

More than the review (which is very informative) what I liked most were your illustrations!

How many pages has the journal?

So the lined and grid don't come in higher grams.... I like the number of pages, though.

I've been journaling using the Zeni Touch note book by the same manufacturer and this one comes with a hard cover and an elastic band very much like the Moleskine ones. It comes with both ruled and blank pages alternating.

The paper quality is good, I think it is about 90gsm and it is FP friendly unless you have a very wet pen. I found it goes very well with my Lamy Vista which has a custom ground stub.

One thing: the Zeni Touch note book can open flat and does not need constant pressure to keep the notebook open when you are writing in it.

Finally, something decent in Singapore! I find it very quite irritating that the Monologue series

has paper which is not that fantastic at all, and that the company stopped importing in those

Rhodia pads... I think they should not use their monopoly on the market to deprive people of

good quality pads. :notworthy1:

I did a review of the ZenITouch journals about 2 months back. It has some photos of vaious pens abd inks for showthrough and bleeding. Search the Paper Review Sub Fourm to find it. Jim

Well all this just means that there is a business opportunity for someone to take up if they are willing to undertake the risk.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
