Brian: If you are such a big fan, you should attempt to contact him with the offer to make him a custom pen...perhaps they'll become a new Edison model called the Tyson.

Way ahead of you.....

This is a very interesting thread - great detective work! I show several video clips with him during the course of our astronomy unit each year. Now, I will have to look more closely to see if there is a pen in his pocket. Brian, please keep us updated if anything works out with that custom pen idea.

After a talk in Jacksonville, FL last spring Dr. Tyson was signing books, posters, etc. and I noticed that he was using a big red Visconti. I asked him what it was and he said it was a Kaleido Voyager, the red marble version. He then asked if the pen in my pocket was an Art Nouveau and asked to look at it. After inspecting it (and fiddling with the clip) he handed it back to me and pulled a pen wallet from his jacket to show me his Visconti Knights Templar. It was one of the more surreal events I have been a part of. I was standing there, talking to arguably the most famous astrophysicist in the world, and we are discussing fountain pens and comparing our pen bling. Dr. Tyson is obviously both a collector and aficionado of fine pens.

Sorry I can't check the video (Still on a dial up connection out here in the boondocks.) but the pen others are describing sounds like the red Kaleido Voyager. That is one magnificent pen.

Surely they'll come up with more clever name than that. He's an astrophysicist/astronomer or something like that so the whole universe is at their disposal.

Here's a recent clip of Neil talking about the last Supermoon (which his super-disses). He keeps touching the pen on the desk in front of him. Anyone care to venture what kind of pen?

He is a great teacher !

I think he will answer your letter of inquiry.

Hint: Don't type the letter.

I'm a huge fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson.

I used to like him until he got on the "Pluto isn't a planet" bandwagon. Pluto is a planet!

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I was standing next to the legend at one of the seasonal pen shows at a local store. He was looking at one of the new OMAS pens and was very interested in the Flessible nib.

No, but he does have an Edison now! I made sure of it by personally handing him one!

Which version did you hand to him?

I want a Beaumont pneumatic in molten ores.

I got a Menlo from you at the 2014 Chicago Pen Show in a light purple swirl because I have a "neon" phone and that color matches. The noble gas used to create purples is Argon.

I gave him a Menlo Pump Filler made of Tortoise Lucite. Just like this one...

He was giving a talk at Kent State, and I managed to hand it over as he was being ushered off stage. I was like a crazy fan-girl!

Yeah, good point. On second thought, maybe a Pelikan Blue Planet, which would also make sense and has a domed solid metal finial.

Pelikan blue planet is beautiful.

Anyone like Ray Bradbury? Please read "The Laurel and Hardy Love Affair" if you have about 12 minutes.

I was also thinking Visconti based on the clip.

Clip from the video...

And here's a Visconti Voyager

Maybe not a Voyager, but I think that it's definitely a Visconti of some type with the same clip style.

Beautiful

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
