Hi Everyone,

 

I've been doing a little Esterbrook collecting recently. My latest acquisition is a nice blue LJ. When I took it apart to find out what was wrong (aside from the sac) - the presser bar fell out. It's broken at the top of the curve. Are there replacements available anywhere?

Try Woodbin or Tryphon. You want the 54 mm bar.

RABBIT, Stephen, sent me a wonderful video he made showing the replacement of a j bar. and there is also a video of sac and J bar replacement in the Repair thread presented by Watch_Art.

Watching a good demonstration of what you need to do, before you actually try to do it, is always a good way to learn, taking away many trials and errors, thus making success more likely.

I am not very mechanically inclined but I have been successful with these simple Estie repairs, replacing sacs and J bars.

If one doesn't have the technology available to them to grind the ridge off of a new J-bar, (no dremel or similar), is there a way to make the lever not floppy? Or is there a source for J-bars without the ridge?

Not that I'm aware of. You could try to find an original Esterbrook J-bar from a donor pen. Alternatively a good j-bar should be around 6. A reproduction is now 3.50.

 

I would volunteer Bruce to shave off the edges for you but he needs his fingers and his hammer is still broken.

Thanks Todd. Perhaps Bruce will have is hammer repaired by the time I get a job and am able to purchase more Estie fixing supplies. Then I'll try bugging him. :roflmho:

A question about grinding the ridges on the aftermarket  J bar: Does one grind the two edges along the entire length?

I would think so but I'd just grab a damaged pen and harvest a j-bar.

Yes, because the sides sometimes hold the pressure bar away from the inside of the barrel enough that the lever flops around.

 

Many times a replacement pressure bar is easier to find than a donor.

Are you bragging or complaining?  😄

 

I have a pretty good supply of donor pens, but after a few years of digging into parts, it becomes harder to find a good one.  I have a bench grinder that I use to gently grind down the edges, then I use the buffer wheel of my Dremel to smooth out the edges.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
