Diamine Raw Sienna

Margana

Recommended Posts

A mink brown Levenger True Writer fine nib is my first choice for all inks in the brown range and it proved to be an excellent match for Diamine Raw Sienna. Color-wise this ink would be a good substitute for the discontinued Sailor Brown. Raw Sienna is slightly more pale but you would have to see the inks adjacent to appreciate the subtle difference. Consider it a medium, almost dark brown that would be fine for any use.

Raw Sienna is not fast drying on Rhodia but acceptable on Apica. It also isn't terribly lubricating but does have good flow. No feathering, bleed-through or show-through so I consider it well-behaved. It has absolutely no staying power when wet but that is not important for my purposes though it could be frustrating to some of you. Raw Sienna does shade but in a flat way, without the depth or color variation of my favorite brown, J. Herbin Lie de Thé.

For someone who is ready for a first foray into brown ink, Raw Sienna would be a good introduction to this color range. Since it is from Diamine, quality is a given.

Nice, Margana! Like many browns, I think you either like Raw Sienna or you just don't. It's long been one of my favorite, go-to Diamine inks. Although my fav brown is currently Diamine Chocolate.

Raw Sienna looks much better out of your pen than it did out of mine. Yours is more saturated. Perhaps I should give it another try in a different pen. Like Julie, my main brown is currently Diamine Chocolate.

I like your writing, by the way.

Diamine Chocolate is a lovely, deep rich brown that won me over with the first stroke. It's tied with Noodler's #41 Brown for my favorite dark brown ink. Once fall weather arrives, Chocolate will get a spin in a Pilot Elite as part of my seasonal palette. Yum!

Glad you like the writing sample. The TW does flow well which affects drying time. Still it does produce a lovely line and saturation so it is worth the wait.

Raw Sienna is my favorite of the inks i have in the brown, red, orange area of the ink spectrum. I think the reason for that is perhaps peculiar to me; it reminds me of one of the colors often seen in prehistoric rock/cave art. When writing with it, or seeing it dried, i kind of feel in continuity with those before me.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm happy just to have it turn out legible.
