My last two guesses were wrong...but some good stuff to try. One of the samples is one I definitely wouldn't have tried on my own (which is one reason I joined - I tend to try the same sort of stuff if I'm picking the ink) but it's a pretty cool ink.

I think what I'm going to do is start kind of an ink sample journal. 1 sheet of a Rhodia notepad per ink, with a line of writing from each different pen the ink gets tried in. That way I can easily see what I do and don't like, compare colors side by side, and maybe even scan and post some samples.

So is this it plus one more which Brian hasn't scanned yet?

I always get a kick out of these "no affiliation" notations when it's blatantly obvious the poster has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, company, etc. beyond being a customer. It must be a feel-good/feel-important thing. So I'll note up front that nothing I write here on this forum is influenced by any financial-gain motivation.

Woo! What a colorful and varied sample collection.

I predict many good things since I'm so new I've been having trouble deciding which brands and colors I "have to" check out. It's hard to resist being brand loyal so I love that 5 different brands were sampled.

(I'll admit: I cheated and looked online before I got home and checked my mailbox. :) )

My Samples arrived today too! All are colors I have never tried before. This is just so much fun! Now if only I could remember where I put my ink sample index cards. I don't know where I put them, and I have new inks to catalog.

I assume so.

I'm still working on the last scan. It's Private Reserve Chartreuse, which doesn't scan well AT ALL! It's a yellow highlighter ink, brand new, and that was the one that held up the Ink Drops from going out on the 1st! I took some pictures of that one and the Noodler's highlighter colors and I'm working on posting them on the Swab Shop soon.

I'm glad everyone is liking the color selection! I'm sorry that the colors were revealed before some of you got your inks :crybaby: Because Chartreuse came later than I thought and we had a holiday weekend, the 7th came too soon. Next month will be better though  Keep in mind, this is a learn-as-we-go process here!

My Ink Drop samples arrived yesterday (Tuesday), here in southern New England. I didn't have any of these inks, so I'm happy. I thought that the highlighter ink added a nice twist on the basic theme--it fits the "elementary" aspect of the theme but also moves it into the upper grades. It's also great to have samples from five different ink makers.

It's been fun to think about the possibilities for other themes to come, too.

I think I can manage it, but I'm open to suggestions on getting those little samples into my pens....

To try a sample, I removed the converter from the pen and dipped it directly into the sample to fill. I also dipped the nib into the sample because I figured I would make a mess trying to fill the nib by turning the converter to force out a little ink. One drop of ink squeezed out when I put the converter into place; there probably is a trick to avoid that.

Syringes/pipets are very helpful. I actually unscrewed the section from my TWSBI and directly filled it with a needle and syringe. I do the same with cartridges too, and have done converters too.

No apologies necessary Brian. This club is "cutting edge" stuff and by definition that means it is "learn as you go"!

Many, many thanks. I am very pleased with my samples and I am excited about future prospects!!

Just got mine today. This is fun!

A question- were all originally packed in clear vials? Mine had been sitting flat all day apparently, then jostled when opening. I noticed that two were in vials with "color". Not sure if they just need to sit upright a while to drain, or if they have some staining tendencies. Not a huge issue either way. I don't have any pens where getting a stain would be an issue.

I noticed that with the Chartreuse, but it went away after standing upright for a while. It looks like it has more surface tension than the others.

That's what I wondered. The Chartreuse and Red both.

This is so exciting!

I am having trouble filling up my pens, expecially large nibbed ones from these vials?

Whats the best way to achieve this?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
