Alpa Mistry Hand Woven Journals Review

Hand Woven Unique Covers and THICK FP Friendly Paper

* Please Wait for the Large(ish) pictures to load from my own server*

I thought I would follow up from an earlier post I made ref these journals (here), as there appears to be very little mention or knowledge of them on this Forum

http://www.saintevemarketing.com/sparepix/Alpa_Mistry_Review/alpa_mistry.jpg

I personally consider these individual and unique journals to be amongst some of the absolute best I have come across and had the pleasure of using - not only because of the thick, textured, FP friendly paper used, but also because of the look and feel of the covering in the hand

The journals themselves are created by a British textile designer, named Alpa Mistry (hence the journal name - obviously) and her website with the PR blurb about her, and her other products is here - http://www.alpamistry.com/bookcovers.html

And a Precis of the PR Blurb from the Website:

Alpa Mistry, a woven textile designer, produces exclusive accessories for fashion and bold interior artworks. Her work is defined by an imaginative, distinctive use of colour, balance and proportion of line.

Each piece of fabric is individually designed and hand-woven on a 24 shaft George Wood dobby loom. The colours are translated into hand-dyed silks and then finely woven in sateen and plain weaves, creating textile pieces with contrasts of sheer and solid fields of colour. Simple and serene to fun and quirky, many of Alpa’s designs are one-off pieces.

These hand woven fabric covered notebooks make a beautiful gift.

Inside, there is plain 120 gsm 'accent natural' textured paper.

Pictures and words on my own Alpa Mistry Journals:

This is the first Alpa Mistry Journal which I have had for some time and is now getting a bit battered and coffee-stained :(

All of the various colour combinations are entirely individual and unique as they are cut from larger pieces of the material and patterns that Alpa Mistry has designed and created - so no two journals are ever exactly the same

The feel of the cover, with it's hand-woven texture, for some reason, is a very comforting feel - don't know why, it just feels that way to me

The paper used on the inside is nice and THICK (120gsm) textured and with a creamy colour, and is VERY Fountain Pen friendly (even for my very wet Ambassador)

The paper actually feels 'quality' and there is almost no bleedthrough, even when using the wettest of writers that I have

The picture below shows the reverse side of the 'test page', and as you can see, there is hardly a shadow showing through

I have also darkened the image slightly to try and show off the textured surface (although am still not sure my photo shows it off that well)

NB - The darker stains on the centre creases and edges are from a spilled cup of coffee (was NOT a happy bunny about that!

Just a pity my photos don't convey enough about the actual quality of these journals

All in all, I have to say that I can't rave about these enough, I even prefer them over Claire Fontaine

I like these that much that I have probably overstocked myself and have enough for years to come!

Steve, I think the pictures came out wonderfully. I'm glad you showed your personal version with coffee stains, I think it adds character and it appears the pages didn't wrinkle, which is good. I have a question though, the leather journals you have available, do they have the same paper inside? YT

Pilot Custom 823 w/ Perle Noire

Hi

The Leather Journals are 90gsm (bit thinner but still FP friendly) still Ivory/Cream coloured but smooth rather than textured

Regards

Steve :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
