... Fs : My Handcrafted Journals ...

TMLee

Recommended Posts

I have decided to start a separate thread from the loooong one that sort of charts my short journey in journal-making. That thread features completed journals.

What is seldom featured are stuff that don't get seen till they are completed, which may take months !

So this thread features designs that I am working on - stuff on my workbench

or will be embarking upon ...

or ideas for new designs ,

or ideas for new paraphernalia (very ambitious here  )

At any one time , several designs are just waiting to be completed for lack of time.

Some cover materials are aesthetically exciting and very often they get quickly implemented onto the coverboards just so I can actualize the imagined results.

And yes, you can order them or reserve them if you like. :)

Or you can request for something unique.(being ambitious here again - i have limitations  )

You are also most welcomed to make suggestions too ... :)

I can never finish this journal somehow ... :hmm1:

It started off with the discovery of some very nicely done handmade paper.

It looked impressive and as usual bought it without having in mind whats to become of it.

Closeup.

Its got perforations and its got a golden thread sewn into it.

I decided to make a wedding guestbook out of it.

Hence the landscaped format.

A5 in size.

Here the covers done ...

and it remains like this for over a year now !

The bookblock is thinner at 5 signatures only.

Doesn't have to be thick.

Writing paper is High white , smooth .In keeping to the concept of a white on white on white book.

What it may look like when completed ...

I am thinking of adding ribbons so it can tie up when closed.

Figured that elastic bands are not appropriate for such a keepsake.

I haven't figure out how to attach the ribbon closures, so thats why it remains unfinished ....

I have an idea but its not fully worked out yet ....

Any suggestions ?

Anyone for a handcrafted wedding guestbook ? :P

this is my reply to 'DavidHandmade's post here ... :)

Hi DavidHandmade,

Thank you for your interest ...

By sheer coincidence , I have this old map of Baltimore.

I am unfamiliar with the geography of the US.

But from the little I found from google, this map district is a little southwest of where I presume you are.

This is what it looks like ...

Specifically, it encompasses the Fort McHenry area ...

More pics here ...

With this , I can craft a quartet of journals much like 'atlantique' here ...

The probability of you residing (or working) anywhere on this map is really really slim ...

If it IS, can you imagine the coincidence ?

haha ... :D

I have another map that is antique looking ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Maps/Map%20France/DSCF2953_1.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Maps/Map%20France/DSCF2954_1.jpg

But I haven't the foggiest idea where it is on this planet ...

Can some kind soul help identify this place ?

This map can also be crafted into a quartet of journals.

The reverse side of this map is equally charming ...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
