I got my grail (Mont Blanc 149) sooner than I had imagined. I bought it tax free new in St. Thomas for $600 (talked the guy down from $650) and it is beautiful. I am so happy! I am sending away soon, though, because I am getting it engraved. Does anyone know if you can engrave on the grip, perhaps just my initials, or does it have to be on the cap? Oh and the clerk at the boutique used to live 3 minutes from my home. Very small world!

Hey Mac -

Congrats man!

I was going to question the wisdom of being in St Thomas in the middle of summer and in the middle of hurricane season, but then I checked and found Charlotte Amalie is 9 degrees F cooler tomorrow than is my home in Atlanta. Got room on your couch for me?

Which nib did you buy? Have you burned some ink yet?

Montblanc offers engraving on resin surfaces like the cap or barrel; on the metal clip, on the body of a metal pen, or on some cap rings. On resin, they will emboss with or without metallic highlights.

See more at Montblanc's website: http://www.montblanc.com/index_engraving.php

The last time I had a pen engraved as a gift (a platinum and rubber Starwalker FP), the only option offered me was subtle engraving of the clip. I engraved not the recipient's name, but rather a significant date. The result was really quite nice.

Congratulations! I got a 149 much faster then I thought I would too: kicking around in my grandfather's desk drawer. Show us pictures after the engraving!

Gratz! Should share this in the montblanc section of the forum too ;)

Wait, you talked the seller into reducing the price? hehe :roflmho:

Nice choice. It's the quintessential fountain pen in my opinion.

ENGRAVED :gaah:

How can you do that ? :bonk:

Why do you want to buy a new pen and then scratch it ?

I hope you are aware you will reduce dramatically the value of the pen!!!

Congratulations and well done.

The 149 is indeed the quintessential FP.

all the other are more like window dressing on the best. Rose gold, MOP, gold, bling etc.

Enjoy your special new family member- I know I love both of mine and my family is due to expand pretty soon!..vintage style

Congratulations on your purchase. Getting a grail pen at a bargain price is a good bonus too.

I'm afraid I'm with goodguy on the engraving part though. I can almost understand engraving a gift as the engraving may commemorate the reason the gift was given. Buying yourself something and then plastering your name all over it to me serves no purpose and cheapens the appearance of the pen (note I do not mean value as I think it is clear that you have zero intention of selling so this is irrelevant to you). Like everything in life though, other people's opinions are irrelevant. If it's want you want, go for it.

I always wanted to engrave a single letter on the clip, but I just can't seem to have the patience to send a pen in to MB :roflmho:

Fair call.

I haven't and wouldn't engrave/ damage any of my MB's.

But that is just me- when I'm using one of my pens, it will either be in my pocket or in my hand!

I've learnt my lesson after a patient stole my first MB! :headsmack:

I remember seeing a Mb boutique that used to put the pen's (the one you sign with) on a rope, saying that people where stealing them.

But it is tempting for me to engrave, since I own 5 146's that look absolutely the same, so it slows me down trying to figure out what ink color or nib size does the pen have;

Can't seem to find a solution yet, I mean I won't engrave "Green ink, F nib" on it... but maybe a letter or number on the tip of the clip? 1,2,3 A, B, C

It's not always about collector value. Some people actually like to use their pens instead of storing them in a pretty case.

Hard times don't last, but hard people do.

Thank a Veteran.

yep that's a tough one.

sounds like you need a wine cellar solution- tagging, special storage positions or excel spreadsheets!

good luck with that.

At least on the 1950's one they have nib size engraved on the blind cap!

I would lean towards a multiple pen holder, with the holder having the 1, 2, 3, etc.

Maybe that's the solution - get the engraving on the blind cap (nib size or letter or etc etc)?

hey congrats!

i also just bought a 149 at a great price.. with a beautiful BB nib.. I have written with it a fair bit for uni in the past week and will send it off for engraving quite soon i would envision..

its true that engraving will reduce the resale value of the pen.. but with a pen like the 149, which is a lifelong companion, why would you sell it anyway.. in this case engraving makes it just that much more special don't you think?

oh, and it helps when you have 2 149s and have one engraved.. makes choosing the nib size that much quicker

Patience is a virtue when waiting for the right pen... although I do just always seem to miss them

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
