Yea I think it makes it all the more special to have it engraved. You can take the 149 off your "on the hunt for" list now

Slightly off topic, I hope you wouldn't mind. :) Do you think a 149 would be too big for a lady? Would the 146 be the "just right" size for me?

The fit has more to do with your preferences than your hand size. If a large, slightly heavier pen with a big nib works well in your hand, then a 149 may be a good choice. If possible, find one to test to see if it fits before committing to buy, and maybe even consider buying used so you can sell it for about what you paid for it.

With all this talk about engraving...here are some pics of my very first MB, which I had Montblanc engrave my signature. I have since changed my signature but I am very fond of this pen because of the engraving.

I'm a girl with small hands and the 149 fits better than the 146. It is a VERY subjective decision and you should look seriously at the barrel size and length of pens you prefer.

I like big, fat, and heavy. The 149 fits the first 2, but not the 3rd. I find it very restful and never get hand cramps.

Thank you Kalessin and Ghost Plane :)

To Macabee,

congrats! I read your thread when you were still asking if the 149 is worth it :) it's so nice that finally you bought it already. I hope you could post pictures!

congrats on your purchase  :clap1:

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
