Dear 300 Pre Sale pen Owners,

The pens are on their way to your hands, I hope you will enjoy them after receive.

The pens were made while I was away in Japan trip then sent out to you immediately after they were completed. After my return I grab a latest pen from the production line, check the whole pen by myself, unfortunately I found this pen has minor leaking on the piston sealing between line1 and line2 (pls refer attached photo, this photo shows the worst result it developed after I fool around it a lot). This is not acceptable by me, definitely will not by you.

This leakage on line 1 is not going to cause any writing problem, or ink storage problem, but it looks un-pleasant.

Further checking on existing pen on hand, we found only a small percentage of the pens has this situation, majority of the pens are ok.

The cause of this leakage was due to unqualified piston seal; some of them has smaller diameter then the spec. Actually the diameter of this very soft seal is almost not possible to be measured due to its softness. Batches of sample we made before did not show clearly the line 1 seal leakage issue, so no pre-inspection before assembly on this parts has been defined on the SOP. Since this find out, we add the in process checking on semi assembled barrel with clear water testing to prevent it from further happening. In the meantime some modification on the seal ring size will be applied; parts with new diameter is being made for testing. p.s. the qualified seal in original design is functioning well without problem.

I feel sorry and apologize for this line 1 leakage will happen on some of the pen you will receive. It is my fault. if you find it happen on your pen please send me an email ( speedy@twsbi.com ) , I will send you new parts for replacement. In the meantime you can still write with it without problem.

Any comments on this pen please do not hesitate to let me know, so we can make further improvement to your wishes.

Best regards

speedy

Hi Speedy,

Looking forward to getting my pen, and if I have to do some mechanical work on it, so much the better :-)

Thanks for letting us know,

Ralf

It is good that you found the bug...and better you admitted to it.

Quality Control is most important. You now have another point of control. The new delivered pieces and in the testing.

Quality control, was part of a job I once had. It is important that the customers get the best quality items.

There are so many places along the line, where something can go wrong.

The people doing quality control must be well trained, and not be muzzled.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

Thanks for the info and for being so forward, it's wonderful that you, the manufacturer, and so accessible to your buyers. I will keep a lookout when I receive my pen.

In a way, I look at myself as a beta tester anyways, so little quibbles are to be expected with a completely new product.

Thank you very much, speedy, for pointing this problem out to us and for offering a remedy. This is high quality customer service, and will be rewarded by customer loyalty and respect. Well done, sir.

It's very nice in the current business world of"That's the way it goes, suck it up" that someone is old school enough, ie consumer oriented, courteous enough to say there is a problem. Here is the solution, if you experience a problem, please notify me so I can rectify it. Great Job. Your proactive behavior will be rewarded in the business you rcv in return. Jim

Thanks for the heads up Speedy. Wish more folks were this pro-active in getting in front of a potential defect in their products. Saves a lot of headaches down the road. Will advise if there's a problem when mine arrives this week (fingers crossed).

I'd also like to commend you for being so totally transparent with a potential fault with your demonstrators. (Awkward pun intended.)

Rest assured any problems I find will not deter me from ordering more of your pens!

Well, the minimum you had to do would have been nothing. I applaud your efforts and tip my hat to you, sir.

Would this be the same problem, slightly exacerbated, or would this be different somehow?

http://rhianna.spwyll.net/files/penleak.jpg

I first noticed the leak because of the ink already behind the second seal, and this is from a single fill (which lasted about two minutes) and subsequent flush. It was once the water in the pen was clear that I noticed the ink behind ("both" seals of) the piston.

As others have mentioned, I specifically wanted in on this run of pens *because* it is the manufacturing prototype (as opposed to the design prototypes assembled by hand) and expect the possibility of the bumps and snags of shaking out the manufacturing to match the design. Even with the replacement parts available I would likely not replace them, in order to keep the charm and authenticity of this being a "first run" pen. But I cannot even disassemble the pen in order to clean the errant ink, as the wrench has ...

Nevermind. In going to search for my original post to reference here, I see you have found it and now know that I broke the pen somehow. Hmmm...

Speedy, just received my pen.

I'm slightly disappointed it DOESN'T suffer of the minor issue you are describing here.

I followed your project since the first day, and had plenty of fun.

Moreover, I really appreciate the passion and the openness you're demostrating us.

Looking forward for further developments (may I book a vacuum filler?), wish you well for massive sales (you already have a market here on FPN, but you'll need far more users).

Okay, now I'm definitely buying one as soon as the Ebay shop goes live. Just have to figure out the nib size I want - eagerly awaiting more writing samples from the preorderers.

I received my pen today. I'm very impressed, overall. My pen, however, does have the leaky piston problem. I just sent an email to Speedy about it. Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention so quickly and for providing a quick fix.

Got mine over the week-end. Just fantastic quality! Love it! But, yes, I do have the seal issue. I'll email you my info when I get home later today.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
