Malware Problem Fixed

Admin

Recommended Posts

Congratulations FPN - and thanks. Nice to have you back

The Malware corrupted a bunch of files on my Mac. Had to run the installation utility diagnostics to fix the problem. Suggest other Mac users do the same.

Could you give more information on this fix, please. I ran verify and repair permissions, but not sure what installation utility diagnostics is? Is it built into the Mac OS X, or an extra? Thanks, CS

Thanks to the Admins for their efforts in getting FPN back up. :clap1:

It appears to me, the risk to any given machine from this is inversely proportional to the level of badness defense softwares and untodatenicitiness of same installed on it. (And with all due respect, it seems "I own this different OS machene so I don't have to worry about badness" is no longer a necessarily valid logic...)

Many thanks to the admins for all their hard work in restoring the board. It was missed.....

The perpetrator of the attack needs hanging out to dry at the very least. Good thing I am not in a position to catch the menace.

Thanks FPN Admin for getting the site back up and running. I too would like to know more details as to what the malware contents were so I may check my machine more thoroughly. I've used Malwarebytes to scan my computer, and it came up clean. However, one can never be too sure.

On a different note, I am outraged towards the hacker and very sympathetic to FPN Admin and its members. Even though I'm a fairly new member to this community, this is one of very few sites in which some civility, integrity and respect are exercised by the majority of the members. It's refreshing to see that some ol' fashioned yet timeless values still exist in the virtual realm. Because of that, I've felt very safe in perusing the contents as well as doing business with the members. However, this past incident made me feel like a victim of a robbery. No one likes the feeling of violation and the realization that something is not safe anymore.

FPN Admin, you have my sympathies, and I hope you have the means to prevent such occurrences in the future. Great job and thank you for providing a forum where people like me can obtain helpful information and great deals to feed our passions/addictions.

Glad you're up and running again. I find it sad that people want to attack a harmless pen site. :-(

We should find the perpetrator and force him or her to write with old Bic pens found inbetween couch cushions!

Thank you, admins, for keeping our community safe!

Thanks for your hard work not only in maintaining this site on a daily basis, but also for dealing with this situation. I didn't realize how much I depend on several days fixes of FPN until it wasn't available.

But I would like to request that the FPN Admin Team delegate one of its members, or one of the many moderators, to let folks know what the status is when these things happen--if only at the beginning and end. And the only practical way to do this is to post on Pentrace. I know there is a history of acrimony between the sites and some individuals and Elaine mentions being attacked for posting some news there (which wasn't even site-related), which I remember. But face it, Pentrace is the only other game in town and all the FPNers go there when our home is down!

Suggestions without any actual backing aren't always helpful, so I would certainly volunteer to post relayed messages over there the next time this happens. I've been through the pen wars--I have a tough skin!

We'll post an official notice over there. Let the attacks begin :-)

Thank you so much for getting the site up and running again! It really is a shame that someone would attack the site and inject malware.

Since we can't tar and feather the real crackers, we will have to make do with this (in the virtual world):

crackermachine# tar -cf hacker*.txt /home/naughty_people
crackermachine# gzip allhackers.tar
crackermachine# ls
  			allhackers.gz
crackermachine# cd ~
crackermachine# cd ..
crackermachine# rm -f

HA!

Thanks for making sure everything is safe and sound for our use. I'm pretty new and I've really enjoyed reading all the reviews as I contemplate difference purchases. I'm glad that everything is back up and running! Thanks!!

The FPN Administrative Team is the best! Thank you for all of your efforts, both the daily running of the site and the clean-up after the malware attack.

The Universe was Just Not Right without FPN in it.

As for the perpetrator, old Bic ballpoints are too good, even if they're fuzzy with couch cushion lint. I vote for crummy give-away advertising pens.

I was getting worried that we are being attacked by aliens from outer space. I missed my FPN fix for 3 days and that was even more worrisome. crybaby.gif

Thank you very much to all those involved in getting FPN back to business. clap1.gifclap1.gifclap1.gif

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
