My sj had tons of old ink in it. I just soaked in water overnight. Dried and swabbed inside with qtip next day. No problems now; old ink was getting on the section before.

Inked:

Pelikan m205 black 0.9ci/F Italifine (Diamine Damson);

Aurora 88 nikargenta (Iroshizuku Kon-Peki);

Pelikan 140 Steno (J Herbin Lie de Thé)

For those recalcitrant globs I use a bottle brush and scrub.

Oh, I read somewhere on FPN that one should not use water to clean the inside of the cap. I wondered why...

On many pens the hardware will rust or corrode if left to sit in water for a long time. Esterbrook used stainless steel so that problem is of lesser concern. When you soak a cap you can also get water behind the blind cap and that can take a long time to dry out causing corrosion problems from the inside out.

Not to mention some pens are made from materials that do not behave well when exposed to water for long periods of time.

Esterbrooks are just special. (Like I had to say that here.)

I doubt this is new to anyone but as it's not been stated here...

There aren't many cleaning jobs that can't be done with a toothbrush, I bought a cheap soft bristled child's toothbrush for cleaning the threads on the cap and the body. A firm bristle would have cleaned it quicker but I chose safety over speed.

Wow - thank you for stating the obvious, because it seriously hadn't occurred to me. This seems more likely to get deeper into the threads than my q-tips.

OK, new person so don't scream to loud but if you wanted to get the water out and not let it set, could you simply put a little isopropyl rubbing alcohol in it and then wipe out with a q tip?

Probably not a good plan with celluloid pens.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
