It will jump.  Ours jumps under the walkway every year, and sends runners further and further away from its assigned patch.  It now habitually crops up 30 feet away.  However, if we assiduously kick over the new stalks each spring, it does not talk over the property.

I used to watch a show called Gardening by the Yard.  The host was a master gardener, and he'd show *how* to do stuff, often working in his *own* yard (which was a lot more interesting than some gardening shows I'd seen, where the host/hostess would take a camera crew around some exquisitely (and professionally) landscaped property.  There was an episode which included a segment about planting bamboo -- and if if was "running" (as opposed to "clumping") bamboo you *started* by digging a 3' deep (!) trench around the bed, lining it with 1" metal rebar used to hold 3' wide sections of rolls of heavy duty plastic in place, and the filling the trench in.  Then planting the bamboo inside the trenched area -- because the bamboo roots *could* -- and *would* -- go down that far...).

I know that in some parts of the US (th DC metro area being among them) they were asking people to grow bamboo in their yards to feed pandas at the local zoo(s).  But unless things have changed, the Pittsburgh Zoo does not have any pandas....

I just liked this image on my Windows lockscreen carousel, so I decided to deviate a little from my usual portraits and drawing this lighthouse (The Baily Lighthouse, Dublin, Ireland).

+1 to what Astronymus said.  Although I was thinking more along the lines of "Surf's up!" (I have some cousins who live in Hawaii, although I've never met any of them, and they're mostly a lot older than me -- the *youngest* is about 8 years older).

Nice. To me, it looks like an impressionist's painting of office buildings.

For some reason, it reminded me of the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando (with reflections)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
