I have a glass pen that a friend of mine was giving away a few years ago.  J Herbin, came with a couple of little bottles of ink.  Cannot for the LIFE of me get it to write....

Is there some trick to it that I'm not getting?  Or do I need to do something like take sandpaper to the tip, or what?

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

Glass pens can be very hit or miss… some of mine are horrible and I have yet to find a way to fix 'em.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I post this not for my frantic scribbles, but to show the  Denril.  I don't know what it was made of, but it's from back in the day when art supply stores handed out free samples.  The image is from a sample booklet.

I still have a page or two left of Denril, and it takes every medium you can think of.

What you can't see here is the amazing sheen, not only for fountain pen ink, but dip pen ink, and whatever 'Nexus' was.

I wonder if Denril is still being made.

Seems it can still be found, but it is pretty expensive...

WAIT, you can get it at Walmart on sale now as a roll (so one may cut one's own sheets):

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

Get it while you can as it's all NOS at this point:  they discontinued Denril in 2021.  From https://www.bordenandriley.com/denril-1:

Quote

Denril Multi-Media Polypropylene Film was discontinued in 2021 due to permanent supply chain issues brought forth by the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been a favorite product within the Borden & Riley family of papers, and has offered artists a multitude of uses over its lifetime.  While we do not have a one-for-one replacement for Denril, we can suggest a few options across Chartpak's brands that may meet your artistic needs.

Alternatives that they suggest three alternatives on that page.  They have a paragraph about each of those alternatives if you're interested.

I hope the families get to see your lovely tributes to these people.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
