I Can't Seem to Stay Away From Dunhill

Despite being rather new it appears I have found my brand of choice. I find that the fit, finish, weight and writing ability of this brand to surpass that of my Visconti's, Montegrappa's, Marlin's and Stipula's. IMO my entry level Montegrappa's are the most visually beautiful pens in my collection but the craftsmanship and writing ability of the Dunhill's far surpasses any of my current pens. I imagine I would have to spend substantially more with those other brands in order to get equal quality. My newest arrival is the Dunhill Sentryman in Carbon Fiber.

For some reasons brands like dunhill, cartier, recife, even s.t. Dupont are a bit less popular on here. I don't know why, they are certainly stunning pens.

Help? Why am I buying so many fountain pens?

I agree. My main hobby is watches. In that world brands such as Cartier, Baume y Mercier, Bvlgari etc. etc are not taken as serious by collectors despite having the same or similar movements and construction.

Excellent pen photos!

I have a couple of Dupont and I agree, excellent laque and very practical writing (the best flowing F Nib in my collection).

I agree, we speak not enough about these brands.

In case I had specific interest posting/giving any information

I will take care to indicate clearly it

I used to own the Sentryman and agree Dunhill make excellent pens.

My main issue with Dunhill and lots of other modern pen makers is the lack of self filling mechanism (preferably piston or vacum).

I am bored very quickly by these CC fillers and they are eventually all being sold due to lack of use and this is the main advantage of pens like the Visconti's or Montblanc over pen makers like Dunhill, Pilot (except the 823), Sheaffer, Parker, Sailor (except the Realo)...etc

I personally found the M nib on my Sentryman to be a bit too smooth and lack of personality (feedback) but if I would have bought the pen with an F nib I'm sure I would love it.

Respect to all

I will echo Glenn's comments. It feels great when you find a pen that is just right for you, and now you know what you like.

On a cynical day I sometimes feel all the pen companies got together and decided to include one flaw with each model so that we all had to keep buying many pens in an effort to find the one perfect one. :)

Glad you found your brand. I will have to try to find a Dunhill some time to try out.

What exactly are the nibs like in general? Goodguy said his was too smooth! Wow.

I frequently feel EXACTLY the same.

In a sense its good being new to FP's like myself, I beleive my lack of knowledge inherently makes me less critical and more focused on the overall big picture. Does it look good? does it write well? is it reliable? does it feel good in the hand? Is it well constrructed? Yes! Then i'm happy. As for the nib, they are very smooth in comparison to my other pens that all have a bit of scratchy to them. The Dunhill ink flow is also greater than my Montegrappa and others and is not nearly as tempermental. I can let a Dunhill sit for 10 days and start writing again while my other pens would need coaxing after that length of time without use.

I too like my Dunhill pens very much; however, the nibs are sourced from different manufacturers. I have three AD2000s and a Sidecar. The AD2000 nibs are from Namiki and the Sidecar has a Bock (very similar size and feed to a MB 144). I don't know who makes the Sentryman nibs, but Dunhill seems to have tight specifications regardless of nib manufacturer. They tend to be moderate to wet writers, making them very smooth indeed.

I agree with Glenn. Good to find a brand you like. I've been contemplating a Dunhill. Looks like I will have to buy one...soon.

Thread ressurrection from a newbie; I'm also a big Dunhill fan and have acquired a nice set of AD pens and pencils now numbering 13. I am currently musing over a Sentryman and would appreciate any views from someone who has both?

Having read this thread for the first time my only real contribution is to correct the suggestion in the original post that Dunhill is a "rather new" pen. There are some stunning examples from the 30's (if you can afford them), there is suggestions that the late 1940's Truepoint pens were made for Dunhill (and whether or not this is true they are great pens) and the 1970's saw some very nice (and now affordable) sterling silver models

I like the Dunhill pen although I don't actually own one yet. Any chance of a picture of your collection? :)

I'm after an AD2000 Carbon Fibre keyring if anyone has one and an AD2000 Fountain pen in sparkle black too - then I'll have finished.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
