Thread 2 - mediocrechris' Sailor traveling journal - Thread 2

So, everybody, welcome to the beginning of the end. :-) I have the journal in front of me and I've pretty much just put gibberish on my first two pages. I intend on putting the journal in the mail on Friday, 2 April 2010. I am going to send it to one of our brothers in Singapore first. Its going to go to Singapore, then the US, then to the UK then back to the US and then to me. I will put in the final entry and then draw names to decide who gets to keep it.

The first order of business, if you are unable to ship internationally then you should send me a PM or an email.

The second order of business, I don't have everybody addresses yet, namely: Hetty, calibr8, and joelchan.

These are the Rules of the Journal which shall be followed:

1. Thou shalt write only with Sailor pens in the journal.

2. Thou shalt not confess to any crimes inside the journal.

3. Thou shalt not keep the journal for longer than 5 calender days.

These are the Guidelines of the Journal which optionally may be followed:

1. Because there are 16 participants, we have to limit ourselves to about 11 to 12 sides of paper per person. This book has 189 sides (94.5 sheets) and I'd like for everybody to have plenty of paper to use. I thought the journal I selected was the best compromise of price and size. (Gallery Leather brand "Leather Desk Journal" from Barnes & Noble)

2. It would be cool if you list the type of Sailor model, nib size, and ink for each pen that you use.

3. It would also be cool if you number and date your pages.

4. I want to reiterate that you should feel free to write anything you want or draw anything you want. For example, on one of my pages I wrote out the lyrics to a song that I really like. If you're into calligraphy, feel free to demonstrate. If you are good at drawing, feel free to draw. You can use your pages for whatever you want.

Okay, those are the 3 rules and 4 guidelines. I'm going to finalize the mailing order tonight and post it either tonight or tomorrow depending on how tired I am when I finish.

watch_art, I really wish you did. I know everybody would have loved to have one of your coffee cup drawings in the book. (Or any of your drawings for that matter.)

Its only a suggestion.... but I thought it would be a fantastic idea if when we ship the journal to the next individual, we included a vial of ink, lets say for arguements sake one of Dillo's vials from FPN filled with an ink of your choice. That way when the journal arrives you have the added suprise of a vial of ink, obviously we would all recieve a vial in exchange for the one we give.

Just a though... and if taken up on the idea I dont mind supplying the vials for free..

I'm willing to do that, but I don't have any vials. If you want to mail one to me, I'd be happy to send some ink to the first person I send to. Having said that, I'm thinking about delaying shipping the journal until Monday because I wanted to look for a larger journal.

OK, here's the updated plan. Moby is sending some vials to me. I will enclose the vials and send it with the journal. The way I see it, I'm going to fill one vial with ink and send it along with the empties. If you want to put ink in a vial and send it feel free. If you see an ink you want to try, try it. If you see a vial you want to keep, keep it, but just put another vial in the bag. This will be done on your honor. Participate in the ink exchange if you want to. Otherwise ignore it. Moby has assured me that the vials weigh nothing so there will be no real change in shipping price.

Now that I am waiting on the vials to arrive, I'm going to go shopping for a larger journal. I am also going to see if I can find a suitable shipping box that we can reuse.

One last thing concerning the ink: if anybody has any serious objections, let me know. Everybody signed up for a traveling journal not a traveling journal and ink sampler exchange. If I have even one person object to the ink exchange, then we will not do it. Feel free to PM if you want to stay anonymous.

Ok, this is where we stand. Right now I still have the journal. I'm still waiting for the vials that Moby sent to arrive. Once they get here, the journal will be mailed.

I was thinking about putting the inks in a freezer baggie, because I don't have a freezer baggie big enough for the journal. :-)

OK! The ink vials arrived today, (Saturday.) That means, on Monday, the journal and the ink vials will be in the mail! It's going to Japan first. Pathfinder3, it will be on the way on April 12th. I will be sending messages to everybody on FPN concerning who they will be mailing to. If you have questions, feel free to message me here or email: chriscompton (at) juno (dot) com

ok, will be looking out for it to arrive. Just a heads up, hopefully it gets here before the 18th. I'll be in the field for a week, so the earliest I can get it back out is on 24th.

Pathfinder, shot over!

Everybody, the journal has been mailed! I enclosed a sample of Noodler's Ottoman Azure. It will be up to Pathfinder, (and everybody else) to decide if they want to participate in the ink exchange. Anyway, I posted the shipping order at the top of this page and over the next few days I will PM you all with the name and address of the person you're going to send the journal to.

Not sure if this is an issue to anyone but me, but those vials may cause problems clearing customs and so on.

I think it is a great idea, and happy to include some from here (the Philippines) but it may cause delays.

It may cause incur costs as well, but I'm happy to cover those.

More concerned that it never gets here.

Whoever send to me let me know ahead of time so I can sort things out.

If timing is right I may be in Singapore anyway!

I have sent many many inks around the world problem free. Im sure that if you clearly state as you are supposed to, what is enclosed within the package on the custom declaration all will be fine.

Okay everybody. I just sent each of you a PM with the name and address of the person you're going to send the journal to. I'm saving the information too, but I thought it would make more sense to send everybody a copy now.

If there are any probelms, if you didn't get a pm, or if the name I gave you does not match what I put above, please let me know!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
