Oswal pens

Oswal Pen Company it seems, was a fairly well established manufacturer of pens in Tiruvellore (Trivellore, the anglicised pronounciation) near Madras in Tamilnadu. This small town had a number of pen manufacturers and there is still at least one manufacturer who still makes Ebonite pens.

I found a box of these pens in a pen shop(the shopkeeper had come across these pens and had kept them for me, knowing my obsession). I was lucky that the original case was also preserved.

The pens are made of Celluloid with BHR ends and section. The pens are ED filled.

The four varieties of the pens that I found. Influences from Parker and Swan are clearly evident.

All are fitted with steel nibs, the largest one has a American made Nib. The name OSWAL is heat stamped on the barrel.

Cheers,

Hari

Hi Hari,

Nice looking pens. How well do they write? Did you get these pens in Chennai? And if yes, could you give me the location of the store (is it in Burma Buzaar?).

Thanks,

Somnath.

Somnath, I found these pens in Bangalore. I have not inked the pens yet, I am just documenting them as of now. Look at this post for information on some Chennai pen shops.

Very nice. Thank you for sharing.

love this celluloid.

Thanks!

Hari

Very nice finds! Any idea of how old these beautiful pens are? The pen box is great. Looking forward to your review of how they write.

Nice finds again Hari..your relentless enthusiasm in digging out these hidden and forgotten Indian brands is most commendable.

Which shop is this where you got these beauties? I live in Bangalore, would like to go pen hunting some time.

Hari, any idea regarding how old these pens are?

I was told that this company existed in the 1940s-60s. FPNer MP Kandan who lives in Tiruvellore should know. I hope he chips in.

Best,

Hari

FPNer MP Kandan was kind enough to provide the following information about the Oswal pen company:

Yes the Oswal pen company was the one among the initial fountain[pen] companies founded in Thiruvallur. The another pen company was founded by my grandfather. The oswal pen company did not exist after 1965. Celluloid pens were very famous that time.It was run by some Jain family(now they are not in thiruvallur, I don't know who they are and where they are). Due to fall in demand, less profit, labourers shortage they might have been forced to close the company. It is very surprising that you pens with the cases. You are very lucky.

The color is very reminiscent of my Wahl-Eversharp HR. I'm willing to bet the celluloid holds this beautiful color longer than colored hard rubber. What a find!

Hello everyone! I am happy to inform you that the above mentioned pen i.e., Oswal pens was being manufactured by my father Late Shri M.Shatilalji Dhariwal. He expired in the year 1985. Our family had moved from Thiruvallur in the year 1966. At present we are staying in Bangalore.

Dhariwal jee, thank you so much for posting in this thread. It will be wonderful if you could share some more information about how and when the Pen company was started by your father, what types of pens were manufactured, when and why you had to close pen making operations.

Thank you.

Hello Shiro.
the images are still there. Just that fpn upgrades have broken the image links. Simply select the “complete” url, copy and paste it in your browser to see images. Like this link.

Thank Hari,
Thought you wouldn't respond after 10 years but you did. If you know any shops that still sell those pens in Mumbai, please informs. Also where can you find old nibs used in oswal pens?

Regards,
Shiro.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
