What a beautiful, moody color. Thanks for the swipes comparing the other purple inks. I have a bottle of Levenger Regal that I haven't tried yet, and I must do so today after reading your review!

Many thanks for all of your nice comments.

Usually I don't like violet inks (lately with few exceptions); this ink is great because of the subtle murky tones and the interesting shading and still being dark enough.

Thank you so much for your review. I like Sailor inks a lot and it's great to see a LE. To my eyes it looks like a hybrid of Sailor Blue and Caran d'Ache Storm, well not exactly, but there are some reddish tints there like with Sailor Blue, sort of...

This is a very good description!

Except that is also has the intensity and darkness of the Sailor Blue. Both mentioned Caran d'Ache inks are pretty weak comared to the Shigure.

I just inked up with Shigure. Got it from Engeika (ebay) a while back.

The great news, it matched your scan exactly, I was very pleased with the color and shading.

The not-so-good news, the bottle is pretty shallow and filling a new pen with a longer nib, I was tenuously tilting the bottle to fill up-->first thought I had issues with the pen, then just dunked it further and finally filled up.

New learning for me how the bottle may affect how easily a pen can be inked up.

Unfortunately this is true

E.g. I already have slight problems to fill a standard size pen like the MB 146 in case dipping beyond its color is necessary to fill it completly.

I'm glad you enjoy the color.

I saw this cool little wooden stand meant for Sailor ink bottles from the Nagasawa department store in Japan. A little pricey for my blood, but definitely a cool and useful item. It holds the ink on an angle to get the most out of those stumpy bottles.

From Nagasawa's Rakuten page:

Here's one with a Tamenuri finish!

Sorry for the hijack!

Michael, thanks for another solid review. I always appreciate your comparisons at the end.

This is an amazing ink, one that I feel could very well replace Herbin's Poussiere de Lune for my "fun" correspondence ink (which I usually relegate to dark, muted, non-standard colours). The sheen I've seen on some writing samples is pretty intense, about the same level as on the Sailor Souten ink, which is my only Sailor ink to date. I actually wanted a bottle of Shigure when I was out shopping for inks, but they were all out.

I'm going to remedy that soon :P

Cheers!

Kevin

Great review, I realize it has been posted some time ago but Shigure is back again as a limited edition. I was especially interested in the comparison with Amazing Amethyst, which I have been using for years and is one of my all-time favorite inks. AA is not terrific in the water resistance department, but shades beautifully and has a faded, old-world quality that I think makes it appropriate for all uses if that is your personality. I had Shigure on top of my wish list but now am hesitant as seeing them side by side I think I'll like AA better. Shigure being slightly more towards purple may be less 'universal' as I see AA. Warm thanks again for this detailed comparison.

I realize that I'm posting to a, now, very old thread, but I appreciate your review nonetheless. I bought Private Reserve Ebony Purple about six months ago and while I absolutely love the color, I'm afraid to use the ink as there is particulate matter that has settled out of solution and is floating around in the ink. Saskia_Madding first mentioned Shigure to me as an alternative and ironically, this was just before the color was rereleased. I just got a sample but haven't yet inked it up. From this and other reviews, Shigure looks to be be slightly bluer than Ebony Purple--I wish it was the exact color of Ebony Purple as I prefer the less blue and more purple black color.

When I get a chance to test the ink I will post a review comparing Shigure to the original writing samples I did with Ebony Purple--I probably won't ink it up again.

And given Kevin's comment about Poussiere de Lune, I might add that, one of my absolute favorites, into the review mix as well. Thanks again for such a nice review Michael and for the ink comparisons. –I'm fighting the urge to bend my computer monitor in order to see Shigure and Ebony Purple side by side. :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
