What Japanese pen for my birthday?

I've never thought it was a good idea to advertize the fact that Pam sometimes sends out a pen before receiving the check. It's true she does this sometimes, but it usually is because she knows the buyer. But putting it out on a public board that she may sometimes do this is almost like inviting fraud at her expense, IMO.

Henry Louis, I vaguely remember Hari's post on his problem with the 823. I don't think it was a common problem. I've had mine for over six months and it appears to be quite robust. I think it's the nicest of the pens you are considering. I would be worried about the weight of the Bamboo. The 742 is a nice pen but not the equal--other than the variety of nib sizes--to the 823. If one of the special nibs really calls to you, then the 743 would be appropriate, although in that case I'd be more likely to get a 742 and pocket the price difference!

As for nib size, I love the Japanese fines, but then I cut my teeth on vintage fine nibs and to me the modern European/Boch fines are mediums and much too wide for me.

Edit: Pam is a great seller, someone who I trust and have bought from several times.

Henry, look closely at the blue Bamboo, it has a rose gold clip BUT the rest of the pen has rhodium trim. Make sure you'll be happy with it.

Hey Dan,

The weight of the bamboo according to PinarelloOnly is around the same weight as the VP. I'm quite comfortable with that...

I think I'm going to go for the blue, as it is a nice change from all the black pens. (for christmas, if this is a great pen, I'll consider getting another Pilot; from the Custom series. They're all black, and I don't want to end up with a bunch of black pens. I think the blue and Rhodium fit well together.

However this may change in the time Paypal takes to transfer money to my account...

Enjoy. As I mentioned in my PM, the resin Bamboo doesn't handle like a heavy pen. It's about the same weight as the VP but feels lighter (to me, anyway) due to better balance.

Despite the section step, I'm still using mine and plan to hold on to it. It's a nice pen, and a very unique-looking design.

suggest that all of you, who posted publicly about a well-respected business person's private transaction practices, edit out this information-so she may continue to conduct business as usual..

Henry, you might want to call Pam and see what she's able to do for you.

Henry,

If you want to buy a pen from Pam Braun, you can go to your local Canada Postal office and purchase an International Postal Money Order, in US dollars, that can be cashed in any of the U.S. Postal Offices. Contact Pam and see if she is willing to accept an International Postal Money Order.

Thanks for pointing this out, Siv. I think I'll get the black one.

One concern: The pen itself and the box don't say namiki. They say Pilot...

How much do you intend to write in a sitting with your pen? If it's only a few lines then a Nakaya as I've found anything more and the darn things will be ink starved in no time even with the largest feeds installed, so I see a Nakaya as more of a signature or note pen. If you write 16-20 pages in a sitting then the Black Transparent Pilot Custom 823 is a truly fantastic pen, I put a xxxf full flex Falcon nib on mine and this is now my favorite pen. The Sailor 1911's are always good to go right out of the box, best off the shelf EF nibs I've ever used. The Pilot Custom 743 with a falcon nib is almost as fun as the 823 with the same nib. Both the 823 and 743 have the size 15 nibs and they're pretty big for a modern nib and 'd say on the same level of perfection as Sailor nibs. The Pilot MYU's are just some of the coolest looking fountain pens ever, they're like the Fisher Space pens of the fountain pen world and therefore even cooler. Platinum pens are workhorses but just don't seem to have that extra little something that Sailor and Pilot pens have unless you go for their Urushi versions then you might as well get a Nakaya.

And yes if you get a Pilot Custom 823 there will be a very good chance that you will have to clean some lubricant out of the barrel but 823's are easy to take apart without tools, you can do the whole cleaning operation in under 5 minutes and you're good to go. And if you're worried about the vacuum filling mechanism it should be about 50 years before you have any problems with it.

It's not really a concern: you just met Pilot's marketing types.

In America, Pilot use the Namiki brand for their higher-end pens, so that Americans don't confuse the Yukari Emperor with a G2. Everywhere else, the same pens are branded as Pilot.

I find your comments about Nakaya very interesting. You are not the first to reports problems with ink starvation. Every time I see one of these posts, I pick-up one of my Nakayas and write several pages straight at full speed. No ink starvation, no problems. I've done this test a few times and never have had a problem with any of my Nakayas or modern Platinums which use the same feed and nib design. In fact, out of all of my pens, the Nakayas pass the let sit and wait test. I can leave mine untouched, sitting upright on a stand for at least a month and the pen starts right up. No feed problems here. I don't think any of my other pens made it as long as the Nakaya.

Ah, I hear you.

Hmn. still slightly confused with what to get; I could still get the 823. But the Bamboo is less expensive.

If I get the bamboo I might get one of those Vintage Japanese pens stan has for sale...

The Japanese model has Pilot and it has a rose gold clip [vomit]

The US model has Namiki and has a rhodium clip.

I wouldn't wait around for the current crop of pens from Stan. I think he s close to selling out of everything. But it looks like he will have another sale before the end of the year.

So much for saving up for a Nakaya, eh? :P Just couldn't resist the stripes?

For me, the next pen I'd get would go down like this.

First, what pen I KNOW I want can I get at a good deal. Second, which pen that you WANT may be potentially discontinued soon (i.e. MYU90, but theres 9000 of them floating around). Third, what pen will I actually write with once I get it?

Hmn. Good point Garageboy. What about a pen that has already been discontinued? I've found 2 Parker Vacs and an Esterbrook J all in good condition and I think i'll be picking them up soon. The Japanese pen can wait until Christmas.

Parker Vacs and Esterbrook Js almost grow on trees and are always avail, unless you're looking for a specific color/nib combo and are picky about the condition

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
