Now I'm sure some of you (or all of you) may be wondering, "why is this guy showing this to us? It isn't an Estie, it's just some ugly old 3rd tier celluloid with unfortunate striations that have no clear rhyme or reason and brassed furniture." And you would be correct. This pen wouldn't (and indeed didn't) get a second look. Its an old Pioneer, of which I know nothing. So why am I enthused that I got this pen for $10 shipped? Why am I reporting this in the Esterbrook forum? See the other two pictures below...

That's right, I picked up a 3668 nib for the bargain price of $10 shipped and comes with a cheap pen as safe packaging to boot! Most of the sunburst nibs I've seen tend to run more like $30-35 shipped in similar condition. (I have yet to see a NOS one anywhere). That nib looks like it is n pretty good shape too. I'm looking forward to testing it out when it gets here. And this was a one-bid-auction! ME HAPPY!:D

Eek!!! And congrats, the 3668 is my favorite renew point!

FP Ink Orphanage-Is an ink not working with your pens, not the color you're looking for, is never to see the light of day again?!! If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! From my discussions with Dennis Lively on Wearevers. I've learned that the Pioneer you won is a harder to find wearever sub brand. If it's a faceted barrel and cap as it appears, then it's even more so. It looks to be in the smaller early 1930's style, with a later 1930's clear vue hexagonal clip.

Regarding the brassing. The trim on those models polishes up very well.

Thanks for the information. I just saw a thread from last month regarding Pioneer pens that said some similar info about the company, and even featured a picture of one just like this one, but cleaner. Your info about the particular model is something I hadn't seen, thank you. I will have to see how well it cleans up. It does indeed look like it is a faceted barrel. I'll update the information here when it arrives, it just shipped today.

Love the avatar, BTW

David V, if it turns out that you continue to feel that "it's just some ugly old 3rd tier celluloid with unfortunate striations that have no clear rhyme or reason and brassed furniture," pull your nib and send it to me. I'll pay shipping! The color actually appeals to me and I do like faceted barrels.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

How much did that run you for NOS?

I got three NOS nibs, a 2442 Falcon stub, a 9460 Med and the 3668 for $35 shipped.

If you think that one is pretty. You should see some of the stuff in his collection. He's got pics in the 3rd tier forum on thefountainpencommunity.activeboard.com. I go there to oooh and aaah all the time.

Congratulation! That is a great nib and I think you will find that the pen will clean up to be a nice looking one. I bet it makes a good user.

Put my name on the list after Wendy's. I'd be glad to have it.

That would explain why I get very few packages.

Thanks to everyone for the attention to this pen. I will look closely at it when it arrives. Sometimes patterns look better to me in person. So we will see.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
