It's actually more an issue of understanding the spectrum of uses people have, as you point out. I thank you for sharing your perspective.

Very true. And in my experience, given enough people there will be uses any single one of them would never dream of...

At the same time, the amateur economist in me wants to make it about what the price point means to somebody. In your case, it sounds as though there might be an appeal to buying just the nib instead of the pen at a much higher price point than there would be for many others. Given your feelings about the issue, a price of $30 for the nib versus $40 for the pen might still make the nib purchase what you'd go for. For somebody else, a nib at $5 might be too much -- they might prefer the whole pen.

Ah, and that brings up my point of variables. At those price points ($30/$40) it would be a no-brainer for me to a second pen rather than merely a second nib--because to my reasoning I would be getting a back-up/parts pen for only $10. On the other hand, if I were five or more nibs then I would likely get one pen and four nibs. Two or three nibs/pens? I honestly don't know--that savings/value ratio is close enough, for me, that it would likely depend on my mood the day I ordered them.

As for $5 being too much for a nib for some people, I've known quite a few like that. Even if they only wanted one pen, if something happened to the nib they owned they would rather throw the whole thing out and buy a pen for $40 than simply replacing the nib for $5. This is an example of exactly the sort of logic that I personally cannot grasp. Preferring to purchase a whole pen rather than only a nib I can understand, but buying a new car rather than replacing a bad battery is beyond me ;)

A related issue for TWSBI might be what they calculate to maximize their short term revenue and their long term prospects in the industry. Selling a reasonably priced replacement nib might actually cost them pen sales in the short term but may earn them the love of users who would then become TWSBI devotees over the long haul.

That, too, is very true. And I would venture to say that there is no may or might. A reasonably priced nib would most likely cost a few pen sales in the short term and would definitely help foster at least some of the fans already evident to become devotees. The only thing that cannot be predicted at all is which would be more advantageous as far as economic viability. I know that I would personally prefer to see reasonably-priced TWSBI-branded replacement nibs available--but not at the expense of the company. They offer a well-designed, well-engineered, well-made product at a very reasonable price, and I would much rather be able to buy a new one in 20 years than to be able to get a replacement nib now if those options were either/or...

I have been reading the rave revues about this new pen and although being an omas/pelikan/burnham man decided to see what the noise is about. Today I ordered the pen and am now waiting impatiently to put it through its tricks. I will report on my findings later.

.......Also, I have already ground my TWSBI medium to a cursive italic. It would be nice to have a cheaper route of experimenting with the nibs that have the TWSBI logo on them than to buy an entire pen each time. I know the Bock nibs are available, but I much prefer having the TWSBI logo on a nib intended for a TWSBI pen than having to just work with 'generic' nibs...

I would love to see a writing sample of the cursive italic TWSBI. Getting a second pen would be essentially for this reason--to have a different nib. I would not want to swap nibs on the same pen.

Onther question: is there possibility to change the nib on the D530 and where to find and buy the replacement? Could one use the nib from another pen and which?

Levenger True Writer nib units have the same nib-feed-collar units as the TWSBI Diamond 530.

I have to confess that even though I'm a BIG fan of the TWSBI and love my pen, I have not actually read all 25 pages of TWSBI notes here so these questions may have been already answered but I have two questions:

1. when will the colored versions be available?

2. any projected date for the vacu-fil to be available?

I know I should be more patient but it's all YOUR fault for producing such a wonderful pen!

thanks

Hi, I'm interested in your pen. I saw this link from one of the TWSBI reviews.

Is it possible, going forward, for you to post compatible nibs from other manufacturers, sort of DYI (with disclaimer to void the warranty if applicable)?

I became very interested in this pen because of how tinker-friendly it is. If the pen's "engine" is swappable, it should be made public, to allow users to experiment.

"But it is the same with humanity as with the tree. The more he seeks to rise into the height and light, the more vigorously do his roots struggle earthward, downward, into the dark and deep – into the evil." - Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm. Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

The 580 and Vac 700 will take #6 nibs. I'm not sure about the minis.

I thought they were #5 nibs.

Speedy, would you tell us which size nib the 580 uses.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
