We were down in Bellingham today for the Seattle Pen Club meeting there and decided to browse the antique shops afterward. I came away with what I think is an Esterbrook W desk pen - black 8-ball base, black body, clear taper, 2668 nib - in very nice shape for $22.50. I've been cleaning an ocean of partially-dried ink of various colors out of it and it actually seems like the sac is still good as it's still filling well.

 

So, that was a pretty cool find. I've wanted a desk pen for a while but didn't really want to pay shipping on something that heavy.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
