Hi

I'm looking for some advice please.

I'm trying to find out about the Waterman's W5 SSO (oblique) nib? Can anyone give me any information on it, or point me in the right direction to where I can source some info?

The pen I have inherited is in excellent condition, although I haven't fully tested it yet as I'm awaiting ink arrival. The oblique nib is very slightly off-set from the feed, is this normal?

When holding the pen in writing position, the feed appears to be at the correct angle, with the nib very slightly rotated. I was presuming this is as it should be as the nib is designed for those that hold the pen at an angle?

Any comments or information would be appreciated.

Thanks

BTW: welcome to FPN. A great place to learn.

Got this one back from a long trip to Italy. Happy to be home and inked up with Yama-guri.

Namiki, do you like this nib or prefer a more traditional shape?

I prefer traditional open style nibs over the hooded, inlaid or in this case the Falcon.

It is strictly a matter of taste.

All the nib shapes have reasons for their design, from the functional to the decorative.

I choose my pens according to the shape & size of their grips. Open style nibs are well matched by traditional, concave shaped sections.

Might as well share my photos of Michael Masuyama's round-nosed 0.6 mm cursive italic,... a nib that writes like a forgiving stub.

The bottom view of the tipping shows a beveled grind at the sides. This reduces the 14K Sailor MS nib's factory writing edge from about 1.15 mm. to 0.6 mm. The round-nose grind is Michael's own design.

I prefer to write with fairly wide, juicy italics & normally a 0.6 mm. width would be too narrow for me.

The round-nose forces me to write a little smaller than usual. I still get the same measure of control as writing with a 1.1 mm. & with pronounced line-width-variation.

This nib is on my usual travel companion, a burgundy/gold Sailor 1911 Standard. Great for sending post cards or smaller size letters.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
