  1. 1. Are you interested in a special one-of-a-kind fellowship pen?

    • Definitely Yes - I am a Nakaya Owner already.
    • Definitely Yes - I am soon to be a Nakaya Owner (pen in production).
    • Definitely Yes - I always wanted to be a Nakaya Owner.
    • Maybe ? seeing that it will be exclusive to FPM Nakaya members only.
    • Not for me...but a good idea all the same.

I had an email exchange this afternoon with John Mottishaw and I think I can clarify the color issue. Shiro-tamenuri is the color of the pen Charlieboy linked to above, without the decorative cracks and "distressing," just as he said. What confused me is that that pen looked just like my aka-tanemuri pen at the first glance. But if you look at it closely, the base coat under the tanemuri is white, or at least very pale. To me, it looks like a lighter version of the popular greenish heki-tanemuri.

John says that he has not yet offered the Shiro-tamenuri in the US and while the population of Nakaya owners has grown hugely since I last really paid attention, I don't remember anyone with this urushi finish. So that certainly fulfills the premise of making the pen unique.

Anyway, I really like the design Charlieboy has moved forward and I would buy one tomorrow! Today! FYI, I think the price point is really good. I would be happy to order one with Charlieboy.

The design of this pen is basically what I have wanted for some time. :notworthy1:

I would prefer a gold nib, but might John be able to do a switch if the pens pass through him (for me XXF)....

I prefer gold to a silver or rhodium nib. I could consider the dragon instead of the clip...

We suddenly have to replace our cooktop and this may mean we have to replace our counters ....I also need to redo my bathroom floor.... :gaah:

So I don't know if I can order soon. But I do love the design and would love to have the pen if I can work it.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the commitment to placing an order for the initial pen as I too believe in the design, so I will be quick behind you in placing an order with John, may even be a combined order of two pens! John is an amazing person who is well supported by very positive feedback from many FPN members...

Regards,

Charlieboy

Can I decide once I see a picture of the pen?

Yes, I don't think Nayaka will expect anyone to buy the pen before the prototype is produced.

I ordered a prototype today, asking for a XXF nib but otherwise exactly the basic design just as Charlieboy set forth above.

I want to thank Charlieboy again for steering this through the most most difficult phases of this project!

Hi Dan, thanks for placing an order (two pens on order now) you were ahead of me as I placed my order via John late last night (UK time).

As for specification choices like nibs, clips, then this is 'definitely' part of the options that each member can select - this way the pen is unique to their own requirements (even if they wish NOT to have the kanji of 'Fellowship' replacing it with one of their own choice (or indeed none at all).

Progress indeed...

Regards,

Charlieboy

What about the Zogan? Option also?

Without it, the price could get even more interesting?

I could go for that!

Could someone here produce a rough color sketch of the proposed pen?

And could someone clarify if we have a choice of nibs? And if so, how many are there?

Thanks again for the good work

JM is a wonderful asset for this project and we all owe him a thank you

Charlieboy provided two links in his post on January 24 (post #156) that give provide the best illustration of the colors we will have before the prototypes arrive. The first link shows the color of the urushi, tanemuri with a white undercoat, and the second link shows what the sprinkles will look like--except not in a pattern and in platinum (i.e., silver colored not gold) sprinkles.

I think at this point the zogan is part of the base design. The elements that can be changed, as I understand it, are the color (i.e., plating) of the nib and clip, use of a "rollstopper" rather than a clip, and substitution of your name in kanji rather than the kanji for "Fellowship." I suspect that part of the issue is Nakaya's design not to have to re-price every pen and complicate orders.

About the nibs, you can see the full line of Nakaya nibs at nibs.com or Nakaya.org. And I am sure that John would be happy to customize your nib to your tastes (additional fee, of course).

Just to clarify, I am simply repeating the messages I've heard from Charlieboy and John Mottishaw, in the desire to faciliate this happening.

I did confirm my order today, so two prototypes have been ordered now!

I'm not sure if it is just me, But I cannot access that first image with the color. I can only see the second one with the section work

Here is the first image again:

Remember, ignore the decorative "cracks" and just focus on the color. It is a tanemuri with a white undercoat that you can best see at the threads and the ends of the barrel and cap.

I thought those cracks were actually part of the decor

I'm a little hot potato right meow

"no they are not making littler ponies, they are EMBRACING"

I opened a box of cheerios and planted them. I thought they were doughnut seeds. They didn't sprout :( (joke of the week)

The cracks are appropriate for that pen, but the Fellowship pen won't have the cracks--that pen is shown because it is the only photo on hand with the shiro-tanenmuri color.

Charlieboy and I received word today from John Mottishaw at nibs.com that Nakaya is putting the final touches on our prototype Fellowship pens. Of course you can order now, or you can wait and see the prototypes to see if you like the design!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
