Esterbrook Safari Cartridge

Just got an Estie Safari and was wondering about cartridge size. It comes with two, but I was thinking about giving as a gift and would want to give a pack of carts as well. Do any commonly found carts or converters fit?

Thanks.

The Esterbrook cartridges are no longer available but you don't have a problem. Instead of a box of cartridges how about a bottle of ink and a syringe to refill the two that you have. I've been refilling Esterbrook cartridges for longer than I can remember and have never had a problem.

There are carts still around if you look - you might try Brian..... brian@esterbrook.net. I think he has boxes around here somewhere.....

But yes, a needle & refilling works great!!! and you can pick your own colors!

Lisa,

I have heard about this Brian guy. I understand he sits around and pierces new Esterbrook cartridges just to hear the shoooooooooooowwwwwwwush as they suck in air.

I heard a rumor about what he does with pens that still the the cap tags on them but that is another story.

I was planning on the syringe, for my own personal use, but was seeing if I could realistically use it to convert a friend (much easier to do one thing at a time: pen, cartridge, bottle, holding their hand).

Thanks.

This doesn't really help you, but I've read that short international cartridges will fit if the opening is enlarged. They may be flexible enough to stretch when pressed into place, but then again, you'd be pressing fairly hard on a full cartridge, so the chances for inky mishaps are great.

A standard international converter is too long for the barrel, I believe, though it may fit with some trimming. The "bantam" style converters may work, but either would need the neck enlarged.

I don't have any to test, but I'd think a thin Sheaffer cartridge would fit, but they might be even rarer than new Esterbrook carts. Really, I think the blunt needled syringe and a bottle of ink would be the best solution. Maybe a custom mix of ink, so there's an excuse?

Todd, it's all true. But don't tell anyone... except the cart story - he is far too much of a purist to pierce a NOS cartridge..... me, on the other hand - nothing is sacred lol

Isn't this the pen which will take a Sheaffer cartridge after the cartridge has been pierced on a Sheaffer pen?

William

These could be fighting words...

But for the record, I've never tried. It could work. Somewhere in here in Estie land I posted a picture of some cartridge pens and the instructions for the Esterbrook version of the "universal" cartridge along with the adapters for other pens.

Nothing is sacred - OK how about we skip the bachelor party and ink some NOS pens. I think I've got a few dollar pens with paper bands, a 300 that is still sealed and if that doesn't stir the master I've got a stash of unopened desk sets.

I've had mixed results with Sheaffer carts in Esterbrooks. They often work, but sometimes are just a bit too snug to get out of the barrel safely.

I refill with a syringe.

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
