Ink Sample Exchange - United States

Guest Denis Richard

Recommended Posts

Hello from Finland!

I'm not able to join a US-based ink swap, freight costs are too expensive,  but I’m looking for some advice as I might start one in the Nordic region.  Shipping between countries here might also be prohibitive.  Also, although I’ve used FPs on and off for over 50 years, I’m only just seeing the hobby aspects.

I’ve just read through recent comments on vial recommendations and have some questions:

  1. what volume of ink do you usually swap?
  2. as well as sealing to vials well, how else do you package them for the post?
  3. do you use the normal postal service only?

 Thanks in advance,

JohnD

One extra tip re: sending samples and preventing leaks—

Silicon tape/plumbers’ tape, placed around the threads of the vial (aka under the cap) seems to seal these very well.

One roll of the tape lasts almost forever. I bought a new roll today (“PTFE thread seal tape, 1/2” x 260”) at Home Depot, $0.59–well worth it!

Sealing around the caps with blue multi surface tape also works very well but you need to remember to put on the tape and pull it tighter in the same direction as tightening the cap e.g. clockwise. If you do it the other way it can pull the cap slightly loose and let some ink leak out as it relaxes.

Volume: Varies. Work it out with the person you’re swapping with. Anywhere from  2-5ml/ea. (I prefer the higher end of the range whenever possible.) Often 1 for 1, but not necessarily.

Packaging: Usually place vials in a small zip-lock plastic bag, with a paper towel or napkin included, in case of leaks. Maybe bubble wrap or another bag around that.

Yes, usual postal service.

Thanks for the advice.

I‘ll get some 5ml vials. And when they arrive, I’ll get started.

but first to check out the postal regulations here.

Is this still going? I'm looking to extend beyond my four inks I use and would love to swap some samples. I LOVE shading inks and would really like to find a few that are fun to write with; Blues, Greens, Reds, Browns, Coppers, Oranges, etc. Pretty much any shading inks really haha

In sample bottles I have:

Diamine Silver Fox

Diamine Earl Grey

Colorverse Depth (dark blue)

Noodler's Ottoman Rose (only 6-8 drops, pretty much only good for a dip to try it out)

In bottles I have:

Diamine Majestic Blue

Mont Blanc Toffee Brown
Noodler's Bad Gator Green

Noodler's Bad Belted Kingsfisher

Thanks to anyone that would be willing to swap a few!

@Percy Oh, nice. That is a good price! And you get free shipping at $85...clearly one should be practical and go on to buy $82 worth of pen stuff (sorry, I don't make the rules).

Hi, is this ink swap still available? Is anyone interested? I can provide a list of the inks I have for trade if anyone would like to get this going again.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
