Samples I Have to Trade

(These are mostly from Gouletpens. Some have been tried but still have plenty left to get a sense of the ink. Some have never been tried.)

  • Noodler's Polar Black
  • Platinum Carbon Black
  • Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin
  • Montblanc Toffee Brown
  • Diamine Macassar
  • Noodler's #41 Brown
  • Noodler's Walnut
  • Noodler's Brown
  • Akkerman #23 Bekakt Haags
  • Noodler's Kiowa Pecan
  • De Atramentis Black Ed.-Brown
  • Private Reserve Electric DC Blue
  • De Atramentis Indigo Blue
  • Diamine Eclipse
  • Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher
  • J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir
  • Diamine Midnight
  • De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes
  • De Atramentis Atlantic Blue
  • Noodler's Baystate Blue
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Ama-Iro
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuy-kusa

Inks I Have And From Which Can Fill Sample Vials

  • Noodler's Heart of Darkness
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-peki
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Asa-gao
  • 5:4 blend of Kon-peki:Asa-gao (This is what I use in my primary pen most of the time. To my eye, it looks somewhat like Noodler's Elysium. Demonstrates some shading depending on the paper. On Pomegranate brand postcards, it's amazing.)
  • Diamine Majestic Blue

Inks I'd Like to Sample

  • Noodler's Lexington Gray
  • J. Herbin Rouge Hematite
  • J. Herbin Bleu Ocean (reformulated w/ sparkles)
  • Noodler's Cayenne
  • Diamine Ancient Copper
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Yu-Yake
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Take-Sumi

I'm open to other suggestions. I like bold colors and I'm especially interested in inks that shade (and, yes, I realize that shading inks are not necessarily ultra-saturated in pigment) and inks that sheen. I tend toward blue, black, grey and some brown. Not into pink, purple, or green, generally speaking. I don't care for blue-green inks. Probably be worth swapping 2 or 3 vials to make postage worth it.

Hi,

FYI, I'm still distributing these vials, so let me know if you need them via PM or other means. They are still 10 cents a piece, I'm located in the US, and I don't earn anything from these. We just want people to enjoy trying new inks. It's certainly helped me find some of my favourite inks. For the past year, I have been a few hundred miles away from my stash of vials, so some orders have been slow in coming, and I apologise for that. My vials are going to be once again close by so that I can ensure that you get them all as soon as you can so that you can start trading inks right as soon as possible.

Dillon

Stolen: Aurora Optima Demonstrator Red ends Medium nib. Serial number 1216 and Aurora 98 Cartridge/Converter Black bark finish (Archivi Storici) with gold cap. Reward if found. Please contact me if you have seen these pens.

Please send vial orders and other messages to fpninkvials funny-round-mark-thing gmail strange-mark-thing com. My shop is open once again if you need help with your pen.

Will someone with the name of "Jay" who emailed me through the email system provide me an email address? There was no email address provided, so I can't write back.

These new posts reminded me that I got some vials recently (thanks KCat) and meant to post a note here.

...

I'm mostly looking to try Blue-Blacks, I'd like to find a good green and I always want to try any blue I haven't tried before. I'd like to try any of the Noodlers waterproof inks besides black.

...

John

I like very much the Diamine blue black 1864 (either the standard or anniversary bottle) as well as for greens the Diamine Safari Green and the Private Reserve Ebony Green. Both greens quite different but both have their charm.

I will happily offer either 2ml or 3ml samples.

I have to trade:

  • Waterman Purple
  • "Waterman Florida Blue" (I suspect this bottle is either mislabeled or concentrated; it is much more saturated and lightfast than I would expect of Waterman Bleu Effacable)
  • Diamine Sherwood
  • Sheaffer Turquoise (Slovenian)
  • Noodler's Borealis Black
  • Noodler's Red-Black (diluted a bit with local well water, soft and a touch acidic, to mitigate smudging)
  • Chesterfield Archival Vault IG blue-black
  • Pilot Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku (Peacock)

and while these are my wife's inks, she's said I may make exchanges as long as I notify her in advance of doing so:

  • Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin
  • Noodler's VMail Midway Blue
  • Noodler's Blue
  • Noodler's Widow Maker (a somewhat darkish, highly lightfast red)

I am interested in lightfast inks, particularly dark, middling-to-warm browns, and really well-behaved blue-blacks, such as:

Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Guri
Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-kai
Pilot Blue-Black
Diamine Macassar
J. Herbin Lie de The
MontBlanc Toffee Brown
Sheaffer Red

If you have any other suggestions, by all means PM them to me.

Greetings,

The initial post states that vials shouldn't be filled to more than 5ml, but I know Goulet ship 2ml samples, I have also seen 3ml samples mentioned. So what size are people using for exchange samples?

Our vials arrive today (Thanks Dillo) and we (my wife and I) have the following inks...

Noodler's -

  • Borealis Black
  • Legal Lapis
  • The Violet Vote (formerly Iraqi Indigo)
  • Ottoman Azure
  • Apache Sunset
  • Cayenne
  • Periwinkle
  • Fox

J. Herbin -

  • Vert Pré
  • 1670 Rouge Hematite (My wife loves this ink but is willing to part with one sample)
  • 1670 Emerald de Chivor (My wife loves this ink but is willing to part with one sample)

We are currently (almost) out of Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Red, but I see us getting more in the near future.

We are particularly interested in samples of...

  • Anything Shimmery or Sparkly (although we currently have the Diamine Shimmertastic sampler package from Goulet pens on the way)
  • Inks that shade well
  • Bright reds
  • Jewel tones of all sorts

We are not particularly interested in ...

  • Blacks
  • Browns

PM me with any suggestions or offerings

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
