Esterbex, the artist who did the pen and ink drawing was 'Wispa' [AKA Alex]. I think that it is brilliant! I think that when I next meet up with him, I will ask him to sign the picture! Perhaps he will do it using one of the pens that he bought from me when we met last year!

It certainly looks as though the New Year is going to be quite busy!

What with my interrupted sleep pattern at the moment, I have been picking up more news than I think is healthy for me, but have been keeping track of progress or otherwise, of Hugo Chaves, [the leader of Venezuela] who is now being treated for a chest infection.

Being a periodic sufferer of asthma, I sympathise with him, and I hope that he gets better as soon as possible.

About 6 years ago, some members of his entourage came into the Arcade at Portobello Road, and 'picked up' three of the Conway Stewart Centenary Overlaid Pens, in three different colour golds! Not only was I knocked sideways by the size of their 'impulse buying capacity', but it turned out to be a rather embarrassing situation for me, as I only had one box at my stand!

"No problem!" He said, with a smile on his face, "Can you deliver the other two boxes to the Dorchester Hotel sometime next week?"

"Yes! I can!'' I said, still shocked by the speed at which the sale had taken place!

When I got there with my delivery, I was greeted at reception by a smartly dressed man, who made a quick telephone call, and then called over a porter who appeared, to escort me to the Penthouse Suite! :cloud9:

To date, it was the very best day, that I've ever had up at Portobello! And I really hope that he recovers soon!

I't been a good while since I dipped into this topic, so have just been going back through a few of the pages and enjoying the photographs (although it also reignited my disappointment that ill health meant I wasn't able to attend any pen shows last year). The homeless pen is lovely and loving the Cloud House pen (not managed to find the story of that one). Anyway, I've got to love it, it's got my initials on it ;)

Welcome back Carrie!

I'm pleased that you like the Clouds House design, I'm waiting for some brighter weather [sunshine-wise!] when Neal will be able to take some really good pictures of the flat overlays, I'm sure that you will like them even more when they appear here!

I wish your health well! I think everybody could do with an early dose of summer, to lift our spirits!

I'm pleased that you like them!

I can't wait to show the people at Clouds House, I gather that they are getting quite excited by the idea.

Judging from the weather forecast, it will be a 'Long-Johns' day tomorrow!

Please stay warm and dry as possible dear Truffle. We don't wish for your wonderful start to 2013 to be diminished by any health issues.

I feel like encasing myself in one of those bubbles for the immune-impaired....The influenza is rampant here! I've had the vaccine, but rumour has it that it may not be adequate...:bawl:

I've got a box of individually wrapped sanitizer wipes in my car. When I get back in, I wipe my hands, the steering wheel and the door handle, as well as anything else I'm aware of touching. Had the flu once already and can't afford to have it again.

A very satisfying day up at Portobello today, besides the rather cold start, I appreciated the absence of snow!

Two of my regulars came to collect their pens following my repairs to them [the pens! Not to them personally!]

Then a South African arrived with a 'Lilac' marbled English Senior Duofold,[A very rare pen, which I haven't seen for at least 15 years!] which was in need of some pretty intricate 'Plastic Surgery', then he bought a couple of other English Duofolds to go home with!

There were several other customers who came to see me, both to buy pens, and to leave me with pens that need servicing, one way and another, it was a very productive day!

I only managed to read about half a chapter of my book!

The weekend was taken up with repairs, both customer's, and pens that I had bought on Saturday, and on Sunday, I had a surprise phone call from a gentleman who lives further down the road, who wanted to buy a pen as a present for a business colleague of his, he came along to see me, and after looking over my vintage pen stock, he picked a black and pearl Wahl Gold Seal Deco Band pen, from the 1930's. The sale quite brightened up my day!

Maybe it's my imagination, but I seem to be getting enquiries about vintage pen repairs, more so than usual, and I suspect that some of them are from the FPN people, quite possibly as a result of people seeing this thread! Who knows?

Message received loud and clear Chris!

Yes, the Fairy Series of pens will be worked on this coming weekend, [including yours!] so it shouldn't be too long before they will all be available.

Graham has promised that he will be working on the base-pens for the William Morris , and the Myrtle pens that are on order.

Let's hope that tomorrow brings a good day's business at Portobello.

Hi all, please let me break into your dialogues, I'll try to make it short. Some days ago Henry Simpole did some work on my pen and he did it very well! As a surprise and to give him some credit for this excellent service I designed a "Henry Simpole Nib". Henry enjoyed this work and asked me to post it on this thread. So I will do now.

Thank you!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
