I have been following this topic with interest. I only know about it because Henry told me about it himself. We had not spoken at length for some time and I had not realised until recently that he had entered the 21st Century and bought himself a computer!

 

I have known Henry for a number of years and have been very privaledged during that time to visit him in his workshop a number of times. I always leave full of re-newed enthusiasm for fountain pens. Henry was kind enough, in my early collecting days, to help get started with pen reapirs. I had made up my mind that as my collection grew I would like to do this myself but although I had joined the UK Writing Equipment Society there didn't seem to be an obvious path. That great British penman, Arthur Twydle, had just given up conducting his Masterclasses and although I bought a video that he made it wasn't quite the same a sitting in the same room with an expert and getting your fingers inky. Although I don't believe Henry really saw himself as a teacher (and although too kind to say anything, I suspect he wondered if I might turn out to be a clumsy oaf!)he started me off with some basics one day (re-saccing lever fillers)and I can truly say I have never looked back. Henry has always been patient and ready with good advice when I have got stuck or snapped or cracked something.

 

I am not at all surprised that his overlay pens are so popular - they are things of beauty and, for those lucky enough to own one, a joy forever. Sadly I am not amoungst this happy band as yet.[/font]

Now I'm really jealous. This would be so much easier if I could pop the Persian Diversion in the car with his reference materials and trundle up the road to the workshop.

An update on the design process. I was fortunate enough to run into the Persian Diversion last night and we snatched a few minutes to talk pen design and calligraphy. Don't you love those moments when someone indulges you in your obsession?

 

I shipped some examples off to Henry yesterday to give him a rough idea of what I had in mind so that he can at least see the language, but I'm waiting on my co-conspirator to email examples of the calligraphy to me.

 

We have to remember that not everyone shares our obsession, even if they're indulgent enough to talk fountain pens and calligraphy at one in the morning! :yikes: Little things like work and real world commitments creep in. So I'll try to be patient and remember that it's a special man who'll patiently teach the letters of the Arabic alphabet in the middle of the night because a design is important to me. :wub:

Glad to see that your first posting was to this thread.

Sorry guys, have been a little inactive lately - had a busy time and also have a full week-end ahead.

This is just to let you know that I am still in the land of the living and have some more great photographs to put up - but I don't think that I will have time until tomorrow evening.

I will be putting up some really fantastic pics of the Ants Pen.

Sorry about the wait, but they will be worth it.

We may end up needing to play with negative space. Down to the calligraphy, the silver, the shape, and Henry. Waiting to see what the Persian Diversion comes up with.

Now I will go back to my couch, where I'm letting the flu bugs play havoc with my body while my antibiotics defend me so well!

So much for the much lauded 'flu shots!!!:blink: oooh! we have all the smilies again!

Hi, Soki. I'm having one of those weeks where everything doesn't [dealership left me with one of their loaner cars overnight, which is ominous that the simple warranty repair + factory recall weren't so simple], appointments are being cancelled and rescheduled at a moment's notice, I'm 2 days behind on a project and now severe weather moving in complete with squall lines, gale force winds, and potential tornadic conditions.

 

Design. Hmm. Yes. I had an idea around here someplace... :unsure:

Sorry about being lax over the last few days - have had a lot on and various work committments.

GP - After reading your various situations, I don't feel so bad! Hope that things improve for you soon.

Chris - sorry to hear about you being laid up - get well soon.

Whoa! That's the kind of pen that someone here in the tropics would think twice before picking it up. :yikes: Bugs are just about life size for these parts.

 

I can safely confirm that there will be NO insects in any of my designs.

Given it's massive size and the very fine detail Henry put into the ant, it is indeed a frigtening object. Most non pen people don't even know what it is I am carrying around (since it is my daily user).

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
