Oh perfect! Thank you Mark, I feel much better knowing that now. I planned on using this one to tinker with and learn how to work on them :D

I keep thinking about selling some of my pens but all that happens is I keep acquiring more!

Okay, so you're saying the same silicone grease used to lube the piston can be used to seal the collar threads which may have been done on this pen before?

Yes

What talkinghead said.

After getting some advice from th, I tried silicone grease on three MB pens and no leaks. I've also used Ron Zorns Sheaffer formula section sealant with great results.

I wanted to try pure beeswax but the pellets I bought had a really foul odour after melting them, so I went back to pure silicone grease.

Thanks for all the comments! For now, I have used a generous amount of silicone grease, but I plan to use a locally made single part Silicone RTV sealant called Anabond 666 available in 100gm tubes. Pls take care not to overtighten the feeder case while refitting, high likely hood of it breaking.

Best,

ya I have seen the thread, RTV is a very broad category of compounds, the thumbs down is for certain specific types with some specific properties. Good only. Having said that, I am interested to know what actually the compound in the listing is, rather than guesswork about what all it is not :)

Totally agree. Got the spec sheets for one brand of silicone greasesometime ago and it was not as 'pure' as you would think

Well now I can't wait to work on these babies! I'm obviously going to wait for a reason first but I'm glad I don't have to go find a sealant to use and I found out my new 149 doesn't use sealant at all! I'm just wondering, do you really need a tool to remove & replace the assembly? If I could unscrew it using my grip on the nib & feed, is that feasible or dangerous?

I keep thinking about selling some of my pens but all that happens is I keep acquiring more!

No way ! You would destroy both nib and feed in my view, them units are well tight. Invest in the correct keyway tool & use it correctly and you will be fine.

Haha okay well the vintage one came unscrewed easily but I would be more worried about tightening it back in place. I'm actually planning on making my own tools as I have a few things that would work and are adjustable so they can work with the piston AND the nib unit.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
