Mont Blanc- I think not

Some years ago I bought a new Mont Blanc Meisterstuck 149. The pen was cared for and used daily but after about 2 years a hair line crack appeared below the screw thread. I returned the pen to Alfred Dunhill in London who were UK Mont Blanc distributors They informed me that the pen was out of guarantee and a replacement would be chargeable. I stopped using it but was very dissapointed and somewhat agreived, however a friend suggested that I might submit a claim on my house insurance which I did and sure enough they paid out.

 

I used the money to buy another Mont Blanc Meisterstuck 149 and guess what, within a couple of years a hair line crack appeared in this one. I duly returned it to Mont Blanc in London who also informed me that the pen was no longer covered by the guarantee but as a gesture of good will they would replace the barrel (Big Deal). I had also included in the return parcel a Mont Blanc Meistersuck pencil which I had purchaced when I bought my second pen as the mechanism had started to malfunctioned.

 

I was not impressed with the performance of either item and speaking to someone with knowledge of such matters I was informed that MB were experiencing barrel cracking problems. Of this I cannot comment but my confidence in that brand was destroyed which is a shame as I believe the design of the Meisterstuck range to be truly iconic

As I've never owned a MB I can't comment on your experience.

I own a Sheaffer Balance II which had a crack appear in the cap starting where the clip attaches. I returned it to the store I bought it from and Sheaafer replaced it without a comment. It (and all my other celluoid Sheaffers) have been fine since then.

yeah...in my experience, i think Sheaffer has the best customer service when it comes to guarantee and replacing parts.

 

1. They have a list of local addresses on their website no matter where you live

2. If you email Sheaffer on their easy-to-use website, they will contact you and tell you exactly what to do.

 

That is what i did, when my Viewpoint from a Calligraphy set had a faulty nib. They simply told me to post it at this address (i sent it in an envelope in the normal post) and they sent a more expensive calligraphy set back to me within 3 days and a short letter of good service from the person who had contacted me in the email.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've been having with your Montblanc writing instruments. I don't have a Montblanc, but I'm curious...when the second pen developed the crack was it in the barrel? When Montblanc replaced the barrel was the pen otherwise intact? If so, why was that outcome disappointing to you?

I suspect the disappointment was caused by the barrels cracking after the pens were used for only 2 years. If all my pens cracked after only two years of ownership, I too would be disappointed.

FWIW, I have a Mont Blanc Chopin bought in 2003 which is in perfect condition despite frequent use. Perhaps it's the 149 model that has the trouble?

I guess it was disappointed as I had lost faith in a product which on the face of should have performed better, however, I sold the newly refurbed pen, pencil and ball point to a private collector for £200 and included full service history. I hope he has a better experience than I did
